Indications for use
Furacilin is a drug with complex effects. It is used to treat burns, cuts, open wounds and is used to treat eye diseases.
The drug is prescribed for the treatment of chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins and conjunctivitis of any origin. It is prescribed to patients with inflammatory and infectious processes of the organs of vision due to its powerful antifungal and antibacterial effect.
Furacilin is prescribed when foreign bodies get into the eyes, causing redness, swelling and pain.
pharmachologic effect
The drug belongs to the antimicrobial medicines - nitrofuran. The drug forms highly reactive amino derivatives that can cause changes in the protein composition of the pathogenic microorganism.
It destroys the cell membrane, leading to their death. The medicine is used against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Furacilin relieves:
- inflammation;
- hyperemia;
- edema;
- itching and burning.
The medication penetrates the internal barrier located between the blood and tissue fluid and is evenly distributed in them.
Indications for the use of furatsilin for the eyes
Furacilin tablets
The drug effectively fights inflammatory diseases of the external parts and auxiliary apparatus of the eye:
- Conjunctivitis;
- Barley;
- Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid);
- Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea).
For injuries and burns, furatsilin is used to prevent bacterial complications. In such cases, rinsing the eyes should be done with caution so as not to worsen the eye damage. Washing is also recommended to prevent infection in those who have been in contact with sick people. Suitable for use in children; consultation with a pediatrician is advisable.
pharmachologic effect
Furacilin is an antiseptic drug. Its action is aimed at deteriorating the habitat of bacteria, in which the processes of pathogen reproduction are disrupted. In addition, the bactericidal activity of furatsilin against staphylococci and streptococci has been proven. It is significantly lower than that of antibiotics, but is sufficient to prevent infection.
Unlike anti-inflammatory washes, furatsilin does not affect the inflammatory process, which is a natural protective reaction of the body, but the activity of the pathogen. Due to this, the intensity of the inflammatory process is reduced and the patient’s well-being improves.
Combined use with antibiotics enhances the effectiveness of antibacterial drugs. You should rinse your eyes before instilling drops so as not to remove the medicine mechanically.
Preparation of the solution
It is important to properly prepare the solution from the tablets. If you do not follow the dosage and instructions, you may not only not get a positive result, but also cause significant harm to the eye mucosa.
Step-by-step guide to preparing the solution:
- Crush two tablets into powder. Use a clean mortar or spoon to prevent excess tablets or liquids from getting into the medicine.
- Dilute the resulting powder with 200 ml of boiled water, cooled to room temperature. Do not pour out all the water at once; you may have to warm it up a little so that the tablets dissolve well.
- Mix well until the drug is completely dissolved.
- Take gauze and a wide bandage and strain the solution. This is necessary to remove particles that have not dissolved.
Store the solution for no more than a day. A new remedy should be prepared daily. Store the medicine in a jar with a tight-fitting lid in a dark place.
For children
To wash the eyes of newborns, it is recommended to buy a ready-made product. The process of diluting the solution may seem complicated to some.
How to dilute to wash the eyes of newborns and children:
- Sterilize the dishes. If there is no sterilizer, treatment with boiling water is sufficient.
- Turn one pill into powder.
- Pour 100 ml of boiled liquid at 40–50 degrees (do not pour it on the eye; due to the wrong proportion, the baby may get a burn to the mucous membrane).
- Strain through a sterile bandage.
The drug is ready for use. Every three days prepare a new solution.
How to prepare a solution at home
Preparing an aqueous solution from furatsilin tablets is not complicated and can be easily done at home. To do this, follow these steps:
- Boil 200 ml of water.
- While the water is boiling, grind 2 furatsilin tablets into powder (in a mortar or rolling pin).
- Place the resulting powder in a glass or other boiling water-resistant container and pour boiling water over it.
- Stir and leave until cool.
- Strain through sterile gauze or bandage. The strained solution should not contain a single grain that could harm the mucous membranes of the organs of vision.
Washing rules
You can rinse using several methods, the easiest one is using cotton pads. It is impregnated with a medicinal composition and lightly squeezed so that liquid does not flow from it. Then the lower eyelid is pulled back and wiped from the inner edge to the outer (not vice versa, you can introduce an infection or spread an existing one). Suitable for newborns and older children.
The second method is to use special cups. They are sold in pharmacies in the form of funnels. This method is suitable for an adult, but not for a child. Keep your eyes open during the procedure. May sting slightly.
The third method is to use a rubber bulb. It is pre-treated with boiling water. The liquid is collected and poured into the conjunctival sac. Do not touch the mucous membrane with the tip of the rubber bulb.
Before rinsing your eyes, wash your hands with antibacterial soap. Do not touch the diseased organ of vision with your hands during the manipulation.
If you need to rinse two eyes, do it with different cotton pads. Compliance with these recommendations will not allow the disease to spread to a healthy organ of vision.
Furacilin for children
Furacilin is often recommended for the treatment of newborn eyes. This product gently and effectively eliminates germs without harming sensitive tissues. The eye wash solution for newborns must be sterile.
To prepare such a mixture, you need to take not boiled water, but distilled water or saline solution. Furacilin is added to a sterile liquid and left until completely dissolved. The solution should be filtered through a sterile bandage. After this, you need to slightly warm the product to room temperature.
To properly rinse your baby’s eyes, you need to take the prepared solution and soak a cotton swab in it. You need to wipe your eyes from the outer corner to the inner. The second eye is washed with a new swab.
You should always remember that there are many causes of eye inflammation in newborns. Therefore, before using Furacilin, you should consult your pediatrician. In the absence of inflammation of the mucous membrane, there is no need for rinsing. You can cleanse a newborn's eyes of natural secretions with chamomile infusion.
Side effects
The drug is well tolerated by adults and children.
The medicine only in isolated cases causes allergic reactions, manifested in the form of:
- drying of the mucous membranes of the eye;
- hyperemia of the connective membrane;
- small pimples on the eyelids and around the eyes where liquid has entered.
If it gets into the eyes, it causes itching and burning. If adverse reactions occur, you should immediately stop using the drug and rinse your eyes with a sufficient amount of clean and warm water (it is advisable not to use tap water).
To relieve the symptoms of burning and dryness, use an infusion of chamomile or string.
Side effects
While using the solution, the following may appear:
- exacerbation of dermatological diseases;
- optic neuritis;
- nausea and dizziness;
- dyspeptic disorders.
If the product is prepared from a tablet, it must be thoroughly dissolved in water. If diluted insufficiently, small crystals can get onto the mucous membranes of the eye and cause injury. A correctly made solution will not cause negative consequences.
Contraindications
The drug is contraindicated in patients with individual intolerance to the active ingredient (idiosyncrasy).
External use of Furacilin is prohibited for chronic allergic eye diseases:

Analogues:
- antiseptic drops - Vitabakt, Okomistin;
- antibacterial agents - Levomycetin, Tsipromed, Floxal;
- anti-inflammatory - Maxidex, Dexamethasone, Prenacid.
Rinse options
You need to know not only how to dilute a furatsilin tablet for eye rinsing, but also how to administer it. After preparing the solution, you can perform a procedure that is carried out in several ways:
- Use of cotton pads. They are moistened in the solution, the lower eyelid is pushed back with your fingers and the antiseptic is squeezed out. The inflamed eyes are rubbed towards the outer edge.
- Use of eye cups. They can be bought at the pharmacy chain. The cups are like a funnel. The disadvantage is that you cannot close your eyes. This may not be suitable for small children and newborns. The method is used when a foreign body gets into the eyes.
- A rubber bulb that must be sterile. Liquid is taken into it and poured in a slow, controlled flow into the conjunctival sac. The method is similar to using a sterile pipette.
- Baths. You can buy special baths at the pharmacy. The method is based on alternately lowering each eye into the solution. When rinsing your eyes, you should not close your eyes; only frequent blinking is allowed.
If there is inflammation in only 1 eye, you still need to rinse both eyes. This protects against the infection spreading to healthy conjunctiva. If antiseptic wipes do not have the desired effect for 4-5 days, then you need the help of an ophthalmologist who will select an alternative treatment for the pathology.
Reviews
Polina: In the morning the eye became inflamed and pus began to come out. There was no time to run to the doctor, I decided to rinse with Furacilin, chamomile solution and Tobrex drops (this was the treatment prescribed by the ophthalmologist last time). After three days everything went away.
Elena: Conjunctivitis has tormented me, half of my face is swollen. As soon as I notice the first signs, I immediately start using Furacilin and Penicillin. On the second day it becomes easier, the main thing is to apply lotions and rinse regularly.
Olga: Cheap and effective remedy. I have been buying Furacilin for as long as I can remember. Never disappears from the home medicine cabinet. Particularly effective for burns.
Why rinse your eyes with chlorhexidine?
Chlorhexidine is a strong antiseptic. It is often prescribed for conjunctivitis, in which purulent crusts appear. It is better not to prepare a solution based on this substance yourself, as it contains aggressive components that can damage the mucous membrane. You can purchase a ready-made solution of chlorhexidine with a concentration of 0.02 or 0.05%. Wash the purulent eyes with the eyelids closed. You need to moisten a swab (gauze, cotton wool) in the solution and wipe it over your eyelids from the temple to the inner corner of the eye. For conjunctivitis, rinsing is done 5 or more times a day. If the solution gets on the surface of your eye, rinse it with water.
Shelf life and storage
The shelf life of the tablets is 5 years. After the date indicated on the package, the medication cannot be used.
Store the drug in a dry place, protected from light at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C.
