What happens to veins during pregnancy
As a pregnant woman's body weight increases, the load on the legs increases and the pressure on the vessels and veins increases. The volume of circulating blood doubles, but due to the fact that the pressure in the veins is lower than in the arteries, the venous outflow from the lower extremities to the heart slows down, the blood stagnates. The venous wall stretches and the vein expands. Because of this, the risk of developing varicose veins and thrombosis in a pregnant woman increases significantly. To prevent the appearance of varicose veins or prevent their development during pregnancy, gynecologists and phlebologists advise wearing compression stockings.

Most expectant mothers know that doctors recommend wearing compression stockings during pregnancy. However, only those who have problems with blood vessels consider it obligatory to follow the advice. In fact, even for a woman with completely healthy legs, the risk of pathology increases during pregnancy. Young women are interested in how to choose compression stockings for pregnant women and how to wear special knitwear.
How does elastic underwear help?
Compression stockings and tights are a good preventive measure against the appearance of swelling, thrombosis or varicose veins. These problems are often provoked by a sedentary lifestyle, pregnancy, and increased stress on the legs when playing sports. During gestation, the volume of blood circulating through the vessels increases, and its outflow from the veins of the lower extremities slows down. The blood stagnates in them, stretching the walls of blood vessels.
Elastic stockings recommended by doctors can support them. Uniform pressure distribution helps:
- normalize blood flow
- supply the body with useful substances
- relieve swelling
- maintain vascular walls in tone
- prevent blood clots
Even if pregnant women have never encountered this problem, during childbirth there is a particularly high risk of clots in the blood vessels. That is why you should definitely have special underwear in the bag you take with you to the maternity hospital.
Compression stockings for pregnant women - how to choose
Choosing special stockings is not an easy task. Their effectiveness depends on the quality of the product. The product belongs to the category of specific ones, and they should be purchased in specialized stores so as not to doubt their reliability. Be sure to read the information on the packaging:
- manufacturer's mark
- type of material
- volume parameters
- compression class
- product care instructions
High-quality compression hosiery should include natural cotton , lycra , microfiber , and nylon . They should not cause an allergic reaction. The inclusion of other types of material indicates insufficient quality. Stockings are divided into men's, women's and universal. There is no significant difference between them. When making women's knitwear, attention is paid to color and external design, as they are often worn openly, choosing the shade in accordance with the design of the clothing.
How to find out the size of compression stockings for pregnant women
The sizes of special knitwear are determined in accordance with the personal anatomical features of the structure of the woman’s limbs. It is better to take measurements in the morning.
When buying compression stockings for pregnant women, how to choose the size? The tape measure should be pressed tightly against your leg, but not too tight. They are usually measured in 4 places:
- ankle
- caviar in the most voluminous place
- thigh just below the buttock
- height of the back of the stocking
The measurement results are checked against the size table, which each manufacturer has its own. Stockings that are too tight will compress the blood vessels, while stockings that are loose will not give the desired effect. Precisely designed underwear will not only be comfortable to wear, but will bring maximum benefits to a woman’s health.
Compression level
Compression stockings are distributed according to the amount of compression, which determines the parameters of the pressure exerted by the underwear. Depending on the degree of exposure to knitwear, there are several types of special material from which preventive, therapeutic and hospital stockings are produced.
The latter type is used during childbirth and during surgery. The required class of underwear is prescribed by the doctor, taking into account the manifestation of symptoms and the general condition of the patient:
- Class I (up to 23 mm Hg) is prescribed at the initial stage - in case of vascular nodules, mesh, swelling
- Class II (up to 33 mm Hg) is used for initial symptoms of thrombosis and varicose veins
- Class III (up to 45 mm Hg) is recommended for severe varicose veins with trophic disorder
- Class IV (up to 50 mm Hg) is used in cases of disruption of lymph flow and significant swelling
How to put on compression stockings for pregnant women
Special underwear is put on in the morning without getting out of bed.
Advice! Knitwear should be handled carefully: to avoid tearing the stockings during the pulling process, you can use latex gloves.
It is more convenient to wear stockings if:
- turn them out to the ankle
- Gradually pull the bottom part onto the foot, aligning the toe and heel
- Pull the stockings higher in small sections, smoothing out wrinkles
Phlebologists and gynecologists recommend wearing compression stockings for preventive purposes to reduce swelling and other risks before childbirth from the 2nd trimester of pregnancy, during the birth of a child, and in the postpartum period. A specialist will tell you how to choose compression stockings for pregnant women.

How to choose maternity stockings
Stockings are divided according to the degree of compression. The classification depends on the pressure that is created at the ankle level. The required compression class is determined by the doctor, taking into account the condition of your legs.
Choosing the color of compression and surgical stockings:
- white
- beige
- black
Often, manufacturers produce compression anti-embolic knitwear in white and are cheaper than similar products for everyday wear. Maternity compression stockings for caesarean section do not require long-term wearing. After surgery, they are not worn outside because they are usually white. Operating stockings often do not have distributed compression and wear resistance is low. The non-reinforced heel also makes them not very practical for everyday wear.
Less common are hospital stockings for surgery and beige in color; they can be worn after childbirth and after surgery, as well as on an airplane. It should be noted that they also will not have a strong difference in the degree of compression at the ankle and hip, although the compression class will remain.
Black maternity stockings, of course, are practical; there are no traces of blood or stains on them if there has been an operation. But medical workers do not recommend them, because compression stockings for surgery are hospital, medical stockings, which means they must be white.
For stockings we measure 4 parameters:
- Ankle circumference
- Circumference of the widest part of the lower leg (calf)
- Thigh circumference 5 cm below the gluteal fold
- Length from heel to hip measurement.
After the dimensions are taken, we compare the data with the size selection table, which is individual for each manufacturer. You can view the size chart of a specific manufacturer in the product card of the stocking you have chosen, or by following the link to our article.
What are anti-embolic stockings?
Anti-embolic underwear is a special type of knitwear that is intended specifically for girls during pregnancy and during childbirth. Before you buy anti-embolic stockings, it is very important to be able to choose them correctly. Properly selected underwear significantly reduces the risk of varicose veins and also prevents the occurrence of a number of postpartum complications.
“Anti-embolic stockings are an indispensable attribute that every woman should have during childbirth. Stockings help maintain venous tone and prevent blood stagnation, which can cause not only varicose veins, but also thrombophlebitis. If you do not want to encounter varicose veins after pregnancy, we recommend that you buy anti-embolic stockings as soon as possible, since they must be worn from the very first days of pregnancy” - Vera Aleksandrovna Karpenko, phlebologist, specialist of the highest category
The advantages of anti-embolic stockings are primarily that they promote proper pressure distribution. Graduated compression gradually moves from the ankle area to the hip area. The higher you go to the thigh, the lower the pressure coefficient. This is a specially designed system that works synchronously with biological processes in our body, namely, it promotes the rapid expulsion of blood, improves vascular tone and stabilizes the functioning of the circulatory system as a whole.
Anti-embolic birthing stockings help facilitate this natural process. Medical knitwear prevents blood from stagnating in blood vessels and improves blood circulation, maintaining muscle tone. All this stimulates muscle activity and, thus, the birth process occurs somewhat easier.
Anti-embolic stockings. Indications
Indications for the use of anti-embolic garments include the following pathologies:
- Increased swelling of the lower extremities (mainly at the end of the day);
- If you have pain in your legs or any manifestation of discomfort;
- With increased fatigue;
- Varicose veins;
- When spider veins appear;
- For chronic venous insufficiency;
- Thrombosis;
- If there are cramps in the calves;
- Venous eczema and dermatitis.
Before choosing stockings for childbirth, consult your doctor. A specialist must determine that you have no contraindications to using this product.
How to put on stockings correctly
When using stockings, care must be taken to treat them. To avoid damaging the product when putting it on, use latex gloves
.
Important!!!
- Knitwear should be put on immediately after waking up, without getting out of bed, while your legs are still rested after a night's sleep. If you need morning procedures, then manage to do everything in 15 minutes. If you need more time for your morning routine, just buy a special pillow for your feet. Lie on it for 3-5 minutes and calmly put on the knitwear.
- The knitwear is turned inside out to the foot. Put the stocking on your foot so that the toe and heel “settle”, then begin to pull the fabric with 3-4 cm pinches. Do not twist the stocking and make sure that folds do not form. If you can’t put on stockings yourself, ask your family for help or use a butler, a special device for putting on compression stockings.
If this is your first time wearing compression stockings, watch the video below...
How to put on compression stockings and tights correctly
But it should be borne in mind that only the correct pressure causes the necessary inflow and outflow of blood into the muscles and skin.
Therefore, in order to get the desired therapeutic effect from using compression tights (stockings), and also not to spoil the product, you need to follow a number of rules when putting them on and using them GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
- Compression stockings are put on daily in the morning and removed in the evening (with the exception of hospital stockings, which are also used during sleep). Some doctors recommend wearing special stockings (tights) without getting out of bed immediately after waking up. Others advise walking around a bit to restore natural blood circulation, lying down again and then putting on the product.
- To avoid tissue damage and discomfort when putting on compression stockings (tights), you should remove the rings from your fingers, trim and file your nails well. The same applies to the skin of the feet. Calluses, rough skin and other roughness should be carefully removed with a pumice stone, as they can easily tear the fabric or cause puffiness.
- The skin of your feet should be clean and dry.
- To maintain the maximum therapeutic effect, compression stockings (tights) need to be changed every 6 months. This is the time during which the product is guaranteed to retain its compression properties (subject to proper use).
- To facilitate the process of putting on compression stockings (tights), you can use high-density medical gloves that do not slip and fit tightly to the skin.
- If there is a need to wear compression stockings (tights) during the day, but there is swelling, you should lie down and raise your legs, fixing them in this position for 5-10 minutes. This will help the blood flow from the lower extremities.
- Compression stockings (tights) must be put on and taken off without haste. When removing the product, you need to grab its upper edge and pull it off your legs towards your foot, turning it inside out. To remove the heel part, you must first insert your palm into the product and then carefully remove your foot.
ALGORITHM FOR WEARING COMPRESSION SHOCKINGS (TIGHTS) WITH CLOSED TOES
- First, you should turn the product inside out from the top to the heel area and assemble it into an “accordion” without touching the sock.
- Helping with both hands, insert the foot into the sock and carefully, as if pressing the foot inward, pull the product onto the heel. The main thing is not to overdo it with tension. IMPORTANT! The heel area should exactly coincide with the heel.
- Next, you need to carefully and slowly, without twisting in the process, distribute the product over the lower leg, and then pull it onto the thigh.
- The folds formed when putting on stockings (tights) must be carefully straightened out. You can re-gather the fabric to the “problem” area and distribute it as needed.
If compression stockings (tights) have an open toe, then you must first put a special additional sock made of sliding fabric on your foot. This will make it easier to put on the product. In cases where you can’t do without compression hosiery, but daily “communication” with it causes a lot of trouble, you can make your life easier by using the following aids.
Special gloves.
They have a corrugated surface, which prevents damage to the fabric and makes putting them on easier.
Special devices - butlers
. They are a metal structure coated with solid enamel for good fabric glide. Butlers help stretch the material in the area of highest compression (ankle area) to make it easier for the foot to fit inside the product. Using this device saves a lot of time. Butlers are easy to use and also protect the compression product from overstretching. Today there is a wide variety of butlers from different manufacturers and for different categories of people (standard, larger sizes, sliding for bedridden patients, with elongated and retractable handles, double - for simultaneous putting on compression tights on both legs, etc.)
Special sprays
. Their task is to moisturize the outer layer of the skin, thereby providing better glide and making it easier to put on compression hosiery. The spray can be applied both to the skin and to the reverse side of the product.
How long to wear maternity stockings
Compression jersey is put on immediately after waking up and worn throughout the day. The high moisture and breathability of the materials from which the stockings are made create a healthy microclimate for the legs, allowing the skin to breathe freely; walking in stockings will be comfortable all day. Remove the product before going to bed.
If you had to take off the product outside the home, and you don’t have a special pillow with you, then you can put the jersey back on after a 10-15 minute rest with your legs raised up. It is enough to raise your foot just above your heart, then the blood flow will be maximum, and you can put on compression stockings again.
Phlebologists recommend the use of compression stockings, if indicated, throughout pregnancy and after childbirth. This way you will protect your legs from excessive stress and varicose veins.
Compression stockings for childbirth
Childbirth is a critical period for the vessels and veins of the lower extremities of the expectant mother. To protect the veins from tension directly during childbirth, the doctor prescribes special stockings.
Stockings for childbirth are medical knitwear, with adjusted therapeutic pressure. Such stockings improve blood flow, maintain muscle tone in a horizontal position, prevent the formation of blood clots and help avoid thrombophlebitis. In the maternity hospital, such knitwear is worn all the time, because the load on the legs still remains. You can find detailed information by following the link (“Compression stockings for childbirth”).
What types of compression stockings are there?
Products are divided into two main groups:
- for prevention (15-18 mm Hg) - they can be selected without the help of a doctor (taking into account weight and height) and used at the first manifestations of spider veins;
- therapeutic (more than 18 mm Hg) - specialized medical products, which must be selected by a doctor individually, differ in classes (degrees) of compression.
Table of types of therapeutic compression hosiery by compression classes (degrees)*
Compression class (degree)
Pressure, mmHg Art. | Application | |
I | 18-22 | The initial stage of venous insufficiency, swelling, spider veins, enlarged veins, working while standing or sitting all the time |
II | 23-32 | Chronic venous insufficiency, not accompanied by trophic disorders, superficial thrombophlebitis, swelling after injury, after surgery on the veins, for the prevention of embolism and thrombosis, during pregnancy with venous insufficiency |
III | 34-46 | Complicated chronic venous insufficiency, lymphatic edema, for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis, for post-traumatic edema |
IV | > 49 | “Elephantiasis” of the legs, deep vein thrombosis, swelling, impaired lymphatic drainage |
* Pressure ratings for grades may vary slightly between manufacturers.

How to care for maternity stockings
Stockings should be washed daily. Use liquid detergents for washing - they wash out well and do not destroy the fabric and threads of knitwear. Do not twist the product; to remove water, just squeeze the stockings. Dry flat, spread on a towel, away from heating appliances. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
To degrease silicone rubber, wipe it daily with a cloth moistened with a weak alcohol solution (20% alcohol solution) to remove skin particles that are not washed out during washing. This way the silicone will not lose its properties and the stocking will stay on the leg better.
Stockings, knee socks or tights: what to choose?
Which of the three types of underwear is better is up to each patient to decide for herself. It is important to follow the advice of your doctor.
Knee socks are suitable only in situations where vascular tissue, pain, varicose veins and other problems are localized in the area below the knee. If the problem affects the entire surface of the legs, wearing knee socks will be ineffective. Knee socks will also look bad with a skirt or dress.
Compression stockings for pregnant women are the optimal solution (we recommend reading: why wear compression stockings after a caesarean section?). They look attractive, do not make it difficult to go to the toilet and do not put pressure on the stomach. It is important that the stockings do not lose their functionality. If the product begins to slip off the leg, it should be replaced, because there is no therapeutic effect with uneven pressure on the legs.
The good thing about tights is that they always hold up perfectly and don’t slip. In addition, in addition to the legs, they compress the vessels of the genital organs. However, when wearing them, a pregnant woman has to take them off every time she goes to the toilet.
For many expectant mothers, tights are not attractive due to the fact that they put pressure on the stomach, but the latest models have special inserts that provide a soft fit to the stomach.

The benefits of compression tights during pregnancy
Why do you need compression tights during pregnancy? How do they work and what effect do they have? Every expectant mother asks these questions. Why should a pregnant woman wear compression stockings or tights?
Variable pressure stockings or tights are an auxiliary medical device that helps in supporting the venous network. The technology used in them allows for high-quality and even distribution of pressure on the lower limbs. The greatest pressure acts at the height of the ankles and gradually decreases towards the top. That is, in the calf muscle area the compression reaches 70%, 50% in the middle of the thigh and 40% in the groin area. The effectiveness of compression hosiery is to mechanically push blood from the feet, through the calves and thighs directly to the heart.
Thanks to this “scheme”, it is possible to avoid stagnation of blood in the legs, which has a positive effect on the blood circulation of the mother and the unborn child. To achieve full medical effectiveness, each compression product must be selected individually after prior consultation with a phlebologist or vascular surgeon.
Harmful effects of compression tights for pregnant women
Like any other medical product, compression tights still have a number of contraindications, so before buying compression tights for pregnant women, we recommend that you consult with your doctor about contraindications.
The main contraindications to wearing compression products during pregnancy are:
- The presence of local epithelial ulcers, wounds and other dermatological problems;
- Allergic reaction to any of the components in the composition;
- A difficult pregnancy when a woman is under a doctor's care. In this case, consultation with a doctor regarding the use of compression products during pregnancy is extremely necessary.
Stockings for pregnant women in Ortix offers
Medi stockings (Germany).
The medical effect and safety of products are confirmed by European quality standards RAL-GZ 387. The standards regulate the composition and safety of the material, compression properties, elasticity, strength of knitwear, packaging and labeling requirements. Silver ions are included in the knitting of foot threads, which provides an additional antibacterial effect and eliminates the appearance of unpleasant foot odor. The reinforced toe and heel areas prevent them from quickly wearing out on the foot.
The elastic bands are made of medical silicone, which does not irritate the skin. The silicone in the elastic has holes for air circulation, the skin underneath breathes. Point silicone is responsible for the reliability of fastening on the thigh, the stocking will not slip.
Copper stockings stretch longitudinally and transversely, so they are easier to put on than others. Models with open toes come with a special silk sock, which also makes putting them on easier.
Our salons offer 4 lines of Copper stockings: Elegance, Comfort, Duomed, Plus. The selection table is designed for 7 sizes and two lengths: standard and small. This choice allows you to more carefully select the required size for women with different heights or wide hips.
Knitting using Clima comfort technology allows you to wear knitwear at any time of the year. They are not cold in winter, not hot in summer, and your feet do not sweat under stockings. For beginners wearing compression products, stockings from the Elegance line are suitable.
The compression of the stockings lasts for 6 months with regular wear and daily gentle washing. They can be used simultaneously with creams and gels for the feet, without losing their compression properties. The fabric does not use cotton, so the products do not pill and are not prone to shrinkage after washing and dry quickly.
What to choose: open or closed toe (toe)?
- closed toe and heel
- open toe
- open toe and open heel
Everything is clear here. Closed toe is becoming less and less common and will suffer the same fate as bandaging - this option will not be used. Stockings with an open toe are more convenient for surgery because through the hole in the sock the doctor will be able to assess the patient’s condition, as well as relieve compression, for example in the ankle, if the product strongly compresses the leg. If the patient has large feet, then an open toe for surgical products will also be preferable. An open heel is rare, as the absence of a heel will result in a decrease in the amount of pressure.
An open toe and heel is an interesting option, but then there will be no pressure on the heel, and the overall compression in the ankle area of the foot will decrease. This option is suitable in special cases on the recommendation of a doctor, and is associated with non-standard foot sizes
Operating medical stockings are needed for everyone who is preparing for surgery, childbirth or caesarean section. And for women in labor to preserve blood vessels in their legs during overload. If there are female prerequisites for varicose veins (after all, after carrying a heavy belly, veins in the legs often become visible) and for those who do not have them, so that this disease does not appear. After all, it is known that varicose veins are extremely difficult to cure, which means it is better to avoid it. During childbirth, no less pressure is exerted on the walls of blood vessels than before. And this is dangerous due to the formation of a blood clot and the consequences of its separation.
If you take into account all these tips, then your legs will easily bear all the burdens in a medical institution, and after discharge they will be even more beautiful than before.

Stockings Luomma Idealista (Russia)
Maternity stockings are made from soft fabrics using Swiss and German raw materials of the highest quality. The manufacturing process is controlled by a Finnish company, in accordance with the European RAL standard.
Strong elastic threads in the foot area increase the wear resistance of the products; they do not rub under the toes and heel so quickly. The dotted medical silicone used in the elastic does not cause allergies or irritation to the skin.
Luomma stockings do not stretch longitudinally, so you need to put them on and pull them up more carefully so as not to damage them. The size chart is smaller than the Medi and includes 4 sizes. However, stockings are quite convenient to select, because... They have two lengths, closed/open toe, models for regular and wide hips.
Depending on the season, you can choose transparent and thick knitwear in different colors. The compression of the stockings lasts for 6 months with regular wear and daily gentle washing. Decent knitwear at Russian prices!
Varicose veins during pregnancy. Risk group
Varicose veins in pregnant women occur in approximately 15-30% of cases. The threat of this disease is especially significant when:
- Vein disease runs in the family. The genetic factor plays an important role. The formation of varicose veins during pregnancy depends on their hereditary tendency to weaken the connective tissue that makes up the veins and blood vessels. Women without a congenital risk factor can go through several pregnancies without developing varicose veins;
- Venous disorders were present even before pregnancy. An increase in the concentration of female hormones during pregnancy leads to dilation of the veins and, consequently, to a more intense blood load on the venous system, which can lead to venous-lymphatic stagnation and, as a result, to varicose veins;
- Second pregnancy and more . In some pregnant women, varicose veins appear during their first pregnancy, but in most cases they occur in a fairly mild and treatable form. The likelihood of developing varicose veins increases during subsequent pregnancies, and existing varicose veins increase significantly during subsequent pregnancies;
- The pregnancy occurred during a hot period of the year. It is known that in the heat and when high temperatures prevail, veins tend to expand; therefore, in late spring and summer, the likelihood of varicose veins is incredibly high. Also concomitant factors that can lead to vasodilation are taking a bath that is too hot and using woolen bedding, which accumulates heat. Heat causes expansion of superficial blood vessels, that is, leads to dilation of veins, so during pregnancy it is recommended to avoid such climatic conditions;
- Staying in one position for a long time. If a pregnant woman, for one reason or another, is forced to sit or stand for a long time, this can lead to stagnation of blood in the veins. Prolonged static position contributes to a significant deterioration in the outflow of blood from the lower extremities to the heart. Remember that the calf muscles, when moving your legs vigorously, act as a pump that pulls blood from the lower extremities to the heart. Restriction of this natural movement, combined with gravity, contributes to decreased blood flow in the legs and therefore reduced blood in the uterus, which can lead to premature labor.
How to prevent varicose veins during pregnancy?
How to counteract blood retention and swelling of the legs?
- During pregnancy, try to avoid prolonged static positions, but also do not overdo it with physical activity. Everything must be balanced;
- Don't sit too low and avoid hard edges of seats;
- Walk more in the fresh air, take trips, go swimming;
- If you are forced to sit or stand in one place for a long time, take breaks from time to time for physical exercise;
- Do not take hot baths;
- Don't stay in the sun for too long;
- In hot weather, cool your feet with cool water;
- Regularly perform gymnastic exercises for pregnant women;
- While relaxing on a sofa, chair or bed, try to take a position in which your legs are slightly above the level of your heart muscle;
- Be sure to use compression tights for pregnant women.

Orto stockings (St. Petersburg)
Durable elastic stockings are made in Spain, but the company is Russian. Products with an openwork top are fixed on the thigh using a silicone tape that does not cause irritation.
Choosing a size makes it difficult because the stockings come in one length. There is no way to select them according to the patient’s height. This knitwear attracts with its low price. Knitwear is sewn only for a standard figure. If you have narrow or wide thighs, then it will be difficult to choose stockings from this company.
Customers note that Ortho knitwear does not remove moisture from the surface of the skin. Therefore, there is a feeling that the leg is “like glass” and the skin does not breathe.
To avoid feelings of stiffness and discomfort, additionally moisturize the skin of your feet before putting on knitwear. You can also purchase a special spray in our Ortix network.

The level of compression in all products is different. Each compression class is selected individually depending on the diagnosis. The class is prescribed only by the attending physician.
Product compression classes are the pressure force with which they apply to the body. It is impossible to select a class on your own. It would be more correct to follow the advice of a phlebologist.
