How to make (sew) a sling scarf and sling with rings yourself

Sling insert. I share my sewing experience. I'm asking for advice.

Now it’s getting colder here and we’ve been walking in a sling for several days now under my mother’s jacket with a sling insert; before that we were still walking in a backpack and an autumn jumpsuit with padding polyester. Both my daughter and I get pleasure from walking under the same jacket. It's incredibly comfortable, very warm and just pleasant! But before I began to experience the joy and pleasure of wearing a babywearing insert, I experienced great disappointment. Therefore, I want to share my experience with those who are planning to sew a sling insert for themselves.

Let me start with the fact that I don’t have a machine, so at first I spent a long time looking for sling makers in our city who would sew an insert for me. Not finding anyone, I decided to turn to a girl who sews to order. She first heard about the sling insert when I began to explain to her what it was and what it was eaten with.

However, she saw the sling for the first time from me. It is quite difficult for a person who has not encountered babywearing in his life to understand what they want from him. However, after showing her several options found on the Internet, we together settled on the pattern that she demonstrates on her website https://www.guslenok.ru/shop/slingovstavka/. The word “universal” caught my attention. A lot of little details were thought out in this sling insert, so it seemed to us the very best. We took measurements, bought fabric and I began to wait for Anechka to bring me the long-awaited new thing.

In short, I bought the fabric, called Anya and we made a new pattern right on me from a plastic bag

We discussed the details and I began to wait again. This time, the details included a separately tailored and zippered bib for the child, to the neck of which a hood is fastened with a zipper (last time there were buttons), windproof flaps, a fur trim and a fleece bib for me. And this is what came of it

In my opinion, the sling insert looks very good. Only I’m sleepy in the photo.

Side view

This is how we turn up our collar when the wind blows hard

Or you can raise it completely. There are loops in the corners that are fastened to the buttons on the jacket for additional head support and protection from the wind.

Without hood

Now my joy knows no bounds; such walks have many advantages. There is no need to put a bunch of clothes on the child, and on yourself too, it’s warm for both of us! In the supermarket I unzip one zipper and the child doesn’t sweat like before. My hands no longer freeze, thanks to the side zippers, I can easily hide them from the frosty wind, and at the same time hug my daughter

Yesterday we even received a compliment and gave seamstress Anya’s phone number to a nice girl who was interested in our sling insert

Master class on making various slings with your own hands

Today, the appearance on the street, in a park, or in a supermarket of a mother with a baby, comfortably located in a sling, can hardly surprise anyone. But in the second half of the 20th century, when the wife of Dr. Garner, living in Hawaii, first went out into the street with a fabric sling designed by her husband to carry a child, she probably made a splash in the local society with her appearance. Although this method of moving mothers with small children has been known since ancient times, the sling in the form in which we know it now was first designed by Rainer Garner for his daughter Fonda. To a long piece of fabric, such as was used by the ancients, he added rings for greater ease of use. And it turned out to be a sling with rings. The way we are used to seeing it, and the one that helps mothers to be mobile and independent of circumstances. If an American doctor made a sling with his own hands, then why don’t you also make this convenient means of carrying your baby?

Thanks to the sling, the modern mother does not limit herself in communicating with the outside world

Recommendations

To ensure that the finished item meets your expectations, use some tips:

  • Choose fabric according to the season. For summer, linen or cotton is suitable, for winter - wool or fleece. Contact the store salesperson if you are afraid of making a mistake. He will advise you on the most suitable fabrics for the sling.
  • To avoid shrinkage of the product after the first wash, it is better to decate the fabric. To do this, before cutting, carefully iron the material with an iron with steam or wash in hot water. Then dry and iron well.
  • Choose a material color that matches your wardrobe, then the sling will be a great addition to your look.
  • Any carrying model can be decorated with finishing: appliqué, embroidery or a patch pocket.

You can purchase a carrier at the store. The price for the simplest model (sling scarf) ranges from 1000 to 10 thousand rubles.

Sewing any model with your own hands - a sling with rings, a sling-scarf, a sling-sling, a sling-pocket - will be cheaper, since you don’t have to overpay for the brand and trade markup. You will select the fabric of the desired quality and color you like. With such a sling, you and your baby will spend time together comfortably.

Why does mom need to sew a sling herself?

But why should mom sew a sling with her own hands if the stores offer a fairly wide selection of ready-made versions of Garner’s invention?

Firstly, in the sling that you make yourself, you will put all your tenderness, all your love for its little passenger. Psychologists are confident that the baby will feel much more comfortable in it than in a purchased one.

Secondly , you are given complete freedom to choose fabrics and consumables for the sling.

Thirdly, sewing a sling with your own hands is much more profitable in material terms than purchasing it ready-made.

Well, have you decided? Then, first, a little theory.

A baby in a sling can travel both in front of his mother and behind her back

How to sew a sling

Let's look at how to sew the most popular sling models.

Sling scarf

This is the simplest model. A sling scarf can be either sewn from fabric or made from a ready-made scarf. The product does not have seams or any additional elements.

To sew a sling scarf with your own hands, you need material 5–5.5 meters long and about 70 cm wide. Cut the fabric and trim the edges. There are several ways:

  • sew braid along the contour of the sling;
  • overlay;
  • Carefully fold the edge twice so that the edge of the fabric is not visible, iron and sew on a machine.

Scarves are often sewn with narrow ends. For beauty, they can be made curly, rounded or cut at an acute angle. To make it easier to put on a hand-sewn sling scarf, mark its middle - make a small pocket, applique, etc. in the center.

Some mothers do without a sewing machine because they make a sling from a scarf. The main thing is that it is made of natural fabric and the right size.

Ring sling

In addition to a piece of fabric, you will need rings for it. They must be durable, because they have to withstand the weight of the baby. Metal rings with a diameter of at least 7 cm are best suited. Let's look at how to sew a sling with rings. This model has two varieties.

The first one is simple, no sewing. To make such a sling with rings with your own hands, you need a piece of fabric 2–2.5 meters long and 70–80 cm wide. You can take a scarf of a suitable size and 2 rings. In order to sew a sling with rings, it is not necessary to create a pattern.

We measure the fabric and cut off the excess, then we process the edges so that they do not fray. Now we attach the rings to one of the ends of the sling. Thread the fabric through them and stitch them or simply tie them with a nice and strong knot. If you have experience with sewing, you can fold the fabric before threading it into the rings. This sling looks more interesting.

The second variety has soft sides. You can add a small shoulder pad to make it more comfortable to wear. For this model, it is better to use a sling pattern with rings and sides.

You will need: rings, some padding polyester and 2 m of fabric at least 1 m wide. Work progress:

  1. Let's calculate the dimensions of the product. The width of the finished carrier will be 70 cm, but you can adjust it slightly at your discretion. Let's add 7-8 cm to this: 5-6 cm for the sides and 2 cm for the seam hem. There are two sides, so the width of the fabric for the sling will be 70+7+7=84 cm. We measure this value from the edge of the fabric and cut it off.
  2. Let's prepare strips of padding polyester for the sides 5x60 cm. Now measure 40-50 cm from the edge where the tail of the sling will be and make a mark. This is where the sides will begin. Set aside 2 cm from the long edge of the fabric for the hem and 5 cm for the sides.
  3. Fold the fabric along the resulting line and iron it to create a nice, even edge. Now you need to unscrew the fold and, starting from the mark, apply a strip of padding polyester. She should not climb into the allowance. After this, we fold the fabric back so that the padding polyester is inside. We sew along the entire length of the sling.
  4. Now let's move on to the rings. They are secured in the same way as in a sling without sides. The ends of the product can be tapered to make it easier to insert them into the rings. To do this, you need to smoothly narrow the sling from the sides to the free ends. The product is ready.

May-sling

In order to sew a may-sling with your own hands, cut out 2 rectangles of 40x50 cm and 3 straps measuring 200x22 cm from fabric. Seam allowances have already been taken into account. To make it more convenient, make a May-sling pattern on paper.

Progress:

  1. We cut out the straps: to do this, fold the strips of fabric with the right side inward and stitch, leaving one narrow end unstitched. We turn them right side out and iron them. Then we turn it inward and sew off the remaining open ends. In two straps, they will be the top ones; for the mother’s convenience, you can insert strips of padding polyester.
  2. Now we take the squares, fold them with their right sides facing each other and secure them with pins. Many people also place padding polyester between them. We insert the top straps inside. Their edges should extend beyond the seam allowances, this will make them stronger.
  3. Sew all edges except the bottom. Turn the sling right side out and fold the unstitched seam allowances inward. Carefully align the folds with each other, iron and stitch along the very edge. Finally, we place the bottom strap on the sling and stitch it on both sides.

Sling pocket

The size of this carrier is not adjustable, so you need to determine the length of the product. Progress:

  1. Take a measuring tape and measure the distance between the shoulder point and the most protruding point on the opposite thigh. We multiply this value by 2 and add 5 cm for a summer sling or 7 cm for a winter sling. The length of the sling was determined, and its width was 65–70 cm. We cut out a rectangle of this size from the fabric and begin to sew the sling pocket with our own hands.
  2. Fold the piece in half lengthwise and widthwise (you get 4 layers) and mark the dart. We need a narrow side that has no folds. We measure 7.5–8 cm from one edge, connect it with a smooth arc to the other and cut along this line. We fold the fabric with the right side out, combine the resulting arcs, and stitch.
  3. We do a fitting to adjust the length of the sling. Turn it inside out and carefully iron the seam. Now we sew a line from the wrong side at a distance of 1.5 cm from the edge, repeating the contour of the dart. Again, iron it thoroughly on either side, trim the corners of the seams diagonally.
  4. We attach the seam allowance to the main fabric so that it does not stick out and interfere with the baby. It remains to process the edges. We turn them inward 1 cm twice and stitch them.

What is a sling?

A sling or babysling (from English sling - sling) is also called a patchwork holder. This is a device for carrying a child.

Slings are made from fabric using additional fittings. They are designed to ensure that when mother and baby move, her hands remain free.

The main advantage of a sling over a kangaroo is that in it the child is in a natural, physiological position, both lying and sitting. Therefore, in slings, unlike kangaroos, mothers can carry babies from birth.

It is very convenient to breastfeed your baby in a sling. Especially when you and your baby are away from home. This property is appreciated by many nursing mothers. After all, it allows them to be more mobile and communicative.

When moving with a toddler in a sling, the mother’s hands remain free, which is very convenient

Who is it suitable for, who is not?

But, despite the fact that the sling is a convenient and ergonomic device, it is not suitable for everyone.

The sling is suitable for you if you:

A sling is not suitable for you if:

The last two points have nothing to do with you? Then let's move from theory to practice!

The sling is suitable for fashionable, active, active mothers. Those who love to travel and communicate with people

Choosing fabric for a sling

The first requirement for the fabric from which you will sew the sling: it must be 100% natural. And also dense and elastic. It is better to have two sides so that the folds of the sling have the best appearance.

What fabric is best to use to sew a sling with your own hands?

As for colors, the choice is yours. The main thing is that the sling pleases you and your baby and is unique and original.

To make a sling with your own hands, choose a fabric that is dense, elastic and, of course, natural.

Sewing recommendations

What else do you need to know before getting started? If you decide to make a sling with rings, purchase metal rings with a diameter of 7-8 cm in the accessories department of a fabric store.

If your goal is a sling, don’t forget to buy padding polyester for the straps. And choose threads in accordance with the thickness of the fabric from which you will sew your product.

Important point. Before you start cutting out the parts of the sling, the fabric from which you are going to sew it should be washed so that it shrinks.

It’s quite easy to sew a sling scarf, but you still need to learn how to wrap it correctly

The main advantage of a sling-scarf is that by varying the options for winding it, you can distribute the load on your back and shoulders in a way that is comfortable for you.

In order to sew a sling scarf, you will need a spool of thread and a piece of fabric 3-6 m long and 45-70 cm wide. Wider and longer is better. It will be more convenient for you to wrap a long sling, and as the baby grows, it takes up more and more space in it.

Making a sling with rings

This sling is also quite popular. It is convenient to put on and take off. You can adjust the length of the panel, change the position of the baby by laying it down or, conversely, giving it a sitting position. You can carry a baby in it from birth to one year. The inconvenience of this sling is that you have to wear it on one shoulder, often changing position.

Necessary materials

You will need fabric 220 - 240 cm long, 80 cm wide. The requirements for fabric are the same as for a sling - scarf. It is advisable to take double-sided fabric, it looks more beautiful. To make this carrier, in addition to the fabric, you need to buy rings with a diameter of 7 cm. With their help, you will attach the ends of the panel and adjust the position of the baby in the sling. Rings can be made of plastic or metal. Metal ones are preferable, they are much stronger. Pay attention to the threads you will use - they must be strong.

Sewing a sling with rings

  • Sew the edges of the prepared fabric. Stitch them on a sewing machine or stitch them by hand.
  • Take both rings, pass one end of the fabric through them, bend it 4 - 5 cm, and sew it to the fabric. For strength, make 3-4 stitches.
  • Throw the fabric over your shoulder, insert the other end into the rings, and adjust the length of the fabric. Fix the other end well in the rings so that it does not jump out. To do this, pull it through two rings and in the opposite direction through one.

1. Take a fabric 2.20 m by 80 cm (preferably twill, jacquard weave - which stretches slightly diagonally) and 2 reliable rings (diameter at least 6 cm) 2. Process 3 edges of the flap so that the fabric does not fray 3. Thread the fabric into the rings 4. Sew the edge to the main fabric, secure the rings with several seams

Sling insert in a jacket

Even before my daughter was born, I had my eye on a sling and thought that I would definitely sew a sling insert into my down jacket. I diligently collected all the photos of babywearing inserts and babywearing jackets into a separate folder, and not so long ago I came across a detailed master class on sewing it.

But winter was coming to an end, the child held his head uncertainly and vertically in the sling; I did not put her in for long. Why do we need a sling insert if this year we won’t need it yet, and next year we will most likely be dangling around on top of the jacket, since my daughter will already want to walk with her legs. I had these thoughts at the beginning of February.

It was decided to sew a sling insert for this jacket.

Started work. First we needed to find fabric. And my other old jacket was surprisingly suitable for this task. The fabric not only matched the color, but the weave was the same. Also, the jacket had an almost finished hood, and I wanted to make the insert with a hood. I shrunk it and it became the size of a small head.

I cut the sling insert according to the above instructions with minor modifications. Firstly, a hood was added. Secondly, I rounded the lower obtuse corner of the side inserts (well, where have you seen the pointy butts of babies). Thirdly, the bottom of the sling insert is twice narrower (10 cm) than according to the instructions. It could have been done even narrower, why widen the bottom of my mother’s jacket? He just sticks out funny at the same time.

We sew a sling with our own hands

Modern young mothers often resort to the help of various modern gadgets and devices in caring for and raising their children. One of these simple, but significantly easier devices for new parents is a sling - a fabric device designed to carry a child from the first months of life until almost three years of age.

There are several types of slings:

Each type of device for carrying a baby has not only advantages, but also some disadvantages. Perhaps the most convenient to use for both mother and baby is a sling with rings. Young parents note the indispensability of this device not only during walks and travel, but also while feeding their baby. The only drawback is the cost of the accessory in stores and online. But for those who have at least minimal sewing skills, it will not be a problem to make a sling with rings with your own hands. Moreover, when purchasing material, you have the opportunity to independently choose not only the color of the fabric you like, but also decide on its composition.

In the article you can familiarize yourself with a detailed master class on sewing a comfortable device for a newborn and advice from experienced needlewomen on selecting the necessary material and accessories for the job.

Sewing babywearing jacket

Currently, babywearing jackets and other devices that can make the life of mother and baby even brighter can be purchased in specialized stores. But many women prefer to sew such things themselves. Sewing a jacket with your own hands is much more profitable than purchasing a finished product in a store. In addition, such things look very original.

You can independently make not only a light sling jacket, but also a down jacket designed to be worn in the winter season. The simplest option is to sew a sling insert, which can then be fastened to outerwear already in your wardrobe.

The sling jacket consists of a regular jacket with an additional special insert. If necessary, the insert is fastened to the zipper, thanks to which the item acquires additional volume.

The sling insert pattern is a long strip of paper, narrowed at the edges and widened in the middle. This shape of the insert makes it comfortable for the child to wear under the jacket. In order to sew a sling insert, you need to draw a pattern, transfer it to fabric and cut a blank from it. The edges of the workpiece must be processed and zippers sewn to them so that the insert can be fastened on both sides to the zipper on the jacket. The length of the sides of the manufactured part must match the length of the zipper on the jacket.

When sewing a sling insert, it is important to choose the right fabric. It is best to match it with items you already have in your wardrobe. If it is not possible to find the same material, you can sew a contrasting insert. It is important that this part of the fashion item is insulated, as it will protect the baby’s back from hypothermia.

Mothers who know how and love to sew can sew an entire babywearing jacket. To do this, you will need a pattern of outerwear and sewing instructions. In this case, the jacket is sewn separately, and the special insert is sewn separately. These two elements must be connected to each other using zippers. A woman can unfasten the insert if she decides to walk alone or with her baby in a stroller. In this case, the sling jacket will look like regular outerwear.

Tips for choosing fabric and accessories

To sew a sling, you should give preference to dense and elastic fabric with a natural composition. Cotton, linen or viscose fabric is ideal for use in the warm season. For walks in cool weather, a sling made of wool or fleece is suitable. Flowing and slippery fabric (satin, silk) is completely unsuitable for making slings, since a device made from such material will be uncomfortable for parents and the baby during use.

Stretch fabric is great for sewing slings. It is soft to the touch, stretches well and holds the newborn tightly. But for children with more weight (closer to a year), it is better to replace stretch with cotton, since it will stretch too much and put pressure on the shoulders.

It is also important to note that the chosen fabric should drape well and not be too thick. Otherwise, when fixing the baby in the sling, the knots and folds will be too rough, and thus will interfere not only with the baby, but also with the mother.

When choosing accessories, preference should be given to cast metal rings. Only in this case will you be sure that the carrier will withstand the load and the ring will not stretch under the weight of the child. The optimal diameter of the fittings is 7 cm. For winter slings made of denser fabric, the diameter of the ring should be slightly larger. This will make it much easier and faster for you to secure the fabric and adjust the baby’s position.

If you have any doubts about choosing a sling or wearing it correctly, you can find a video presented by Nina Zaichenko. The recommendations that Nina Zaichenko gives will help you figure out how to wrap a sling and how to choose it correctly, taking into account the age and developmental characteristics of the child.

A ring sling is one of the most common and comfortable sling models. And you don’t have to buy it at the store, because making such a sling yourself is very easy!

How to sew a sling with rings?

In order to make a sling with rings with your own hands, you need:

  1. The fabric is 2-2.5 meters long and about 0.8 meters wide.
  2. Two rings with a diameter of 60-70 mm.

When choosing fabric you need to pay attention to the following aspects:

  • it should not slide, otherwise the fastening will not be reliable;
  • the fabric should not stretch lengthwise, but may stretch slightly across;
  • since both the face and the back will be visible, it is better to choose a double-sided option;
  • soft material will not rub the baby’s delicate skin;
  • and, of course, the color and pattern are chosen to your own taste.

It is better to take metal rings so that they are sure to withstand the weight of the baby.

When the fabric is selected, you need to cut a rectangle of the given dimensions and process 3 sides: 2 long and one short. Thread the raw end through both rings, tuck them in and securely stitch them to the fabric so that the rings are in the fabric loop. It makes more sense to sew the end either very close (about 5 cm) or, on the contrary, far (15-20 cm) from the rings, so that the seam does not get caught and rub the shoulder.

It will look neater if, before threading the fabric into the ring, this end is folded like an accordion or in some other way. Then the folds will be smooth and evenly distributed on the shoulder.

How to make a ring sling?

If you don’t have the time or desire to sew, then you can make a sling with rings yourself from scrap materials. The most difficult thing is to get suitable rings, but how to tie a sling with rings so that the design is reliable even without seams is no longer such a big problem. A scarf or handkerchief of the required length (2-2.5 meters) is suitable as a fabric.

The difference is that the rings are not tightly sewn, but one end is threaded through both rings in one direction and one further in the other. The sling is put on so that the rings are in front, and the short end lies on the shoulder and is thrown behind the back. Then, under the weight of the child, the fastening will hold securely without stitching.

A baby in a sling made by mother's hands will definitely be warm and comfortable.
