Sleep problems in a 9 month old baby and how to solve them

Possible causes of restless sleep

If we talk about newborns, then periodic night crying (but not constant) signals hunger. Also, the baby may experience discomfort and fear if he sleeps in a separate crib and does not feel his mother. Babies under 4 months of age often have tummy problems. And from about six months, children begin to sleep poorly due to painful teething. Is it worth talking about proper sleep if the child is cold or hot, uncomfortable in a diaper, or has eaten too much? Often, parents notice that before getting sick, the child stopped sleeping at night. This is the first symptom of a cold, when the others are still invisible. Sometimes children “confuse” the time of day, their normal rhythm is disrupted, so they sleep more during the day, and at night they encourage their parents to play. It is important to note: if sleep disturbances are permanent, the baby cries all the time and is difficult to calm him down, then you need to seek help from a specialist and undergo an examination. Sometimes this problem is a sign of neurological diseases, rickets, etc.

What to do if your child has trouble falling asleep in the evening?

First, let's figure out why the baby has trouble falling asleep in the evening and fusses for a long time? Sound, restful sleep is as necessary a component of a child’s normal development as good nutrition or parental care. Meanwhile, the older children get, the more problems they may have with falling asleep. After spending the whole day actively exploring the world, the child has difficulty falling asleep in the evening, may be capricious and refuse to go to bed. Why is this happening?

Recent studies by London scientists have found a strong correlation between the evening behavior of children from three to seven years old and the lack of a bedtime ritual. Children whose family does not have a constant routine suffer from increased excitability and hyperactivity and are unable to control their emotions.

Many parents allow their babies to stay up late in bed because they feel they are too active to fall asleep at an acceptable time. Meanwhile, such evening activity only speaks of the child’s enormous internal fatigue. If this fatigue is not eliminated by sleep, it will bring negative consequences for behavior in the future and will only worsen the age-related characteristics of the child’s psyche.

What to do if your child has trouble falling asleep in the evening?

At first glance, it may seem almost impossible to get a hyperactive three-year-old into bed at night! In fact, this is not true at all! We will tell you what experts recommend to do if your child has difficulty falling asleep in the evening and fusses for a long time.

  1. The optimal bedtime for children 3-7 years old is from 20:30 to 21:30 hours. It is at this time that children’s brains adjust to their natural biorhythm and will be able to most fully and effectively process the knowledge acquired during the day.
  2. Create a regular bedtime ritual for the whole family. You can read about it in more detail in our article How to organize an evening ritual for the whole family. Be sure to include lullabies in your ritual to help your child relax.
  3. Let him choose a sleep companion - his favorite soft toy or doll. Together with him, sew pajamas for the toy: changing into special clothes together will become a sign for the child’s body that it is time to get ready for bed and will soon have to fall asleep.
  4. Let the ritual of getting ready for bed in the evening become a kind of important but exciting game. Don't push your child, but don't let him get carried away with games again. Be calm and persistent. Children will quickly pick up on your idea of an evening ritual, since this state of affairs reflects their inner need for consistency and routine.
  5. Just a week of a routine for the whole family and moving the preparation for bed to an earlier time will lead to the fact that you will almost completely forget that the child has difficulty falling asleep in the evening . Along with solving sleep problems, you will also find an overall beneficial effect of the regime on hyperactivity: your child will become much calmer and more confident than before.

Lullabies can also help put your baby to sleep. In our collection of Lullabies for the Whole Family you will find many tender and beautiful songs that will help you learn the words and create a new sweet tradition in your family.

Pleasant dreams!

Children's sleep standards

You cannot separate children's sleep from the sleep of the whole family. These concepts are interrelated. If the baby sleeps well, then the parents also get enough sleep, which means that during the day they have energy for everyday activities and educational games, and there is no nervous tension. Pediatricians give the approximate sleep needs for children of different ages:

Age Total per day At night During the day
1 week 16,5 8,5 8
1 month 15,5 8,5 7
3 months 15 9,5 5,5
6 months 14,5 11 3,25
9 months 14 11,25 2,75
12 months 13,75 11,25 2,5
18 months 13,5 11,25 2,25
2 years 13,25 11 2,25
3 years 12 10,5 1,5

*Need for sleep in young children in hours (R. Ferber, 1985)

But these data are not standard, since each child is individual. Some babies love to snuggle in bed, others wake up early in search of new discoveries. But still, a baby under one year old must be put to bed during the day, regardless of how the night went. For a child under 3 years old, 1–2 quiet hours is enough. But children over 5 years old often refuse to sleep during the day. With a good night's sleep, this is considered normal.

Possible causes of the disorder

At what age can you give your child kiwi?

The reasons for a restless night's sleep are most often associated with disruption of the routine and increased emotional activity during the day. These include the following factors:

  • Overfatigue - inquisitive 9-month-old babies spend a lot of energy exploring the world around them, so by the end of the day they have very little energy left; but a lot of stress hormone is produced, which interferes with sleep;
  • Increased excitability - a physiological feature of the nervous system of young children consists of vivid emotional experiences of the events of the past day. This most often refers to new, unusual experiences for the child: a late visit from guests or a trip to the shopping center. Constant worry prevents the baby from relaxing and falling asleep;
  • Incorrect daily routine - by the ninth month, a certain daily routine is usually already formed, which is convenient for all family members. It includes feeding, walking, hygiene, play, activity and sleep. When a disruption occurs in the usual rhythm, children develop a feeling of insecurity and uncertainty. Hence the difficulty falling asleep;
  • Long daytime rest - there are situations when the baby fell asleep right in the stroller during a walk, and the mother did not wake him up so as not to disturb him. On the one hand, she will have time to do household chores, but, on the other hand, the problem arises of how to put the child to bed at night;
  • Excess energy - if during the day the parents did not have time for a walk, massage or other active activities, then the energy accumulated by the child during the day will find a way out in the evening, when it is time to go to bed;
  • Lack of sleep hygiene and falling asleep ritual - scratchy pajamas, an uncomfortable pillow or heat in the room do not contribute to healthy sleep; Without a bedtime story or a lullaby, babies often refuse to sleep - compliance with certain rituals is vital for them;
  • Improper care - the last feeding before bed is not filling enough, a dirty diaper, unnecessary and distracting toys in the crib, and the baby cannot fall asleep;
  • Nervous tension of parents - when there is a depressing atmosphere in the family, there is a smell of quarrel in the air, parents were sorting out their difficult relationship in the presence of the child, such actions have a very negative impact on his sleep, as well as his general psychophysical state;
  • Health problems - teething, stomach pain, or snot running like a stream. Not only the baby does not sleep, but the whole family does not sleep.

One of the reasons for restless sleep is emotional overload

How to improve your baby's sleep

If your child does not have complex illnesses and sleep problems are temporary, try the following tips:

  1. Almost from the maternity hospital with a baby, you need to prioritize sleep issues. At first it will not be easy, but over time he will learn to intuitively understand that the time has come when everyone is resting and he himself needs to sleep too. To do this, it is important to be consistent with all family members, choose a period of time when everyone goes to bed (or behaves very quietly) and gets up. For example, from 21:00 to 5:00. The time frame cannot be shifted for the child. Newborns, of course, can still wake up at night to feed. But from about 6 months, with strict adherence to the regime, babies are able to sleep up to 8 hours at night.
  2. Rocking your baby in your arms to fall asleep is not at all necessary. This process does not affect the health and soundness of sleep. However, the opposite problem is often observed. After being rocked in his arms, the baby immediately begins to cry as soon as he gets into his crib, sleeps restlessly in it, and asks to be held by his mother. If you want your baby to sleep in his own cradle, accustom him to it from birth. Go to bed at the same time, sing songs or tell stories - the quiet, calm voice of your parents has a calming effect. In addition, many crib models are equipped with a pendulum.
  3. Daytime activity is also important for night sleep, so it’s worth thinking about your routine in advance: what time you will get up and eat, how much time is allocated for walks and games, when you will bathe and get ready for bed. Kids quickly fall into a routine, and it gives them a feeling of stability and security. In addition, a good night's sleep is possible if the child is well tired (but not overexcited, otherwise the effect will be the opposite). Long walks in the fresh air, age-appropriate educational games, gymnastics, massage, hardening - all this helps you fall asleep better. The main thing is that active activities do not begin closer to the night. In the evening, it is better to read a book or play calm children's songs.
  4. It is important to find a balance between sleep and meals in children of the first year of life, as these are the basic needs at this age. The main thing to remember here is that breastfeeding on demand should still have a system that will coincide with the daily routine. If your baby asks for breastfeeding every half hour, you should consult a specialist. If a baby is bottle-fed, a night break in feeding is required, from approximately 24:00 to 6:00 in the morning. With a correctly calculated daily and one-time feeding volume, the child can easily withstand this time.
  5. Bathing and a light massage can be used as a ritual to prepare for bed. Kids quickly remember the sequence of actions.
  6. The quality of sleep is also determined by the microclimate in the room. The child's room should not be too cold or hot. Recommended temperature – 20 °C, humidity – 50–70%. It is important to regularly clean and ventilate the room, but make sure that the child is not in a draft.
  7. Parents should take care not only of the cleanliness and comfort of the room, but also of a properly organized sleeping area. The quality of the mattress plays an important role. It should be made of environmentally friendly materials and have medium rigidity for proper back support. Bed linen should also be made from natural fabrics. And while the child is very small, he doesn’t need bright cartoon characters on the sides and duvet cover. It is better to choose something calm and minimalistic. By the way, a child under 2 years old also does not need a pillow, unless the doctor recommends otherwise.
  8. And one more delicate point - dryness. It’s hard to imagine the everyday life of modern parents without diapers. But the choice of these hygiene products must be taken very seriously. In low-quality diapers, liquid is poorly absorbed and irritation and diaper rash may occur. Naturally, discomfort will be a constant cause of sleepless nights. When choosing the appropriate option, pay attention to the absorbent layer. It would also be a good idea to check the comfort of the fasteners or elastic bands when it comes to panty diapers.

Solution

For such a phenomenon as insomnia in childhood, there are several methods for solving it. You can use one or combine them to obtain a pronounced effect.

You should familiarize yourself with the options for getting rid of insomnia in more detail.

Advice from child psychologists

Despite their young age, even the tiniest infants can experience stress, which leads to insomnia. Also during this period of time, it is especially important for children to feel the love and protection of their mother; a deficiency of such sensations leads to various disorders, and insomnia is no exception. To make it easier to fall asleep in the evening and improve your relationship with your baby, child psychologists give the following advice:

  • You should build a trusting relationship with your child, so that if a problem arises, he will first tell his mom and dad about it, and not other relatives or friends.
  • You should maintain a positive atmosphere at home based on love, care and respect. Young children feel nervousness very acutely, and it is transmitted to them.
  • If a child comes with a problem, do not make fun of him, but try to find the optimal solution together.
  • You should prohibit watching any television programs before going to bed. Too funny ones will stimulate the nervous system, scary ones will cause nightmares and tears.

If you take into account all the above factors, it will be possible to reduce the level of tension at home and answer the question of why your child has difficulty falling asleep in the evening.

Optimal conditions for sleep

Perhaps the most important point. In a well-organized bedroom, the baby will fall asleep faster, and sleep will be serene and uninterrupted throughout the night.

To do this, certain conditions must be met:

  1. The room must be thoroughly cleaned and ventilated every day, the air in it must always be fresh.
  2. The optimal air temperature is no higher than 22 degrees. A room that is too warm or cold will make it difficult for your baby to sleep.
  3. It is important to choose a bed that matches your age and height, as well as a special orthopedic mattress and pillow.
  4. The room must have excellent sound insulation so that sounds from outside do not disturb children's sleep.
  5. Ideally, you should completely avoid light during your night's rest. If the baby shows anxiety, then you need to limit yourself to one dim night light.
  6. Before going to bed, you can give your child warm milk to drink; it has a beneficial effect on the process of falling asleep.

Evening rituals

Many experts emphasize the importance of creating special rituals that will quietly prepare the child for bedtime. They might look like this:

  1. First, parents take their baby for a leisurely evening walk in the fresh air. It is extremely important to prevent active and active games during this time.
  2. After returning from the street, the child is given a light dinner, which will satisfy hunger, but will not cause heaviness in the stomach.
  3. Then comes the turn of swimming. For a baby bath, you can use shampoos and shower gels that contain plant extracts that have a sedative effect on the central nervous system. The water should be warm; cold or hot water can negatively affect the process of falling asleep.
  4. After this, you can read a book to your child and sing a lullaby.
  5. When the baby begins to fall asleep, you should wish him good night, turn off the lights completely or leave the night light dim and leave the room.

Rituals such as the one described above create the necessary mood for the child to go to bed.

Advice! It is important to remember: the established order should be strictly adhered to, only then will it have the required impact.

Medicines and herbal medicine

Most pediatricians have a negative attitude towards the use of any medications for insomnia in young children. Such drugs will initially be able to solve the problem of falling asleep, but parents run the risk of encountering new troubles: the child may become drowsy during the day, and side effects often occur after taking medications. In addition, there is no need for a growing body to start using chemicals from early childhood; this will serve a disservice at an older age.

In the case of herbal medicine, doctors also do not give a definite answer. Herbal preparations and infusions should be used if the child does not have allergic reactions to them. Then, before going to bed, it would be a good idea to add a few drops of lavender oil, which has a sedative effect, to your bathtub. As a nightly drink, you can give your baby tea with chamomile or valerian, which will help you fall asleep faster.

Advice! In any case, before deciding whether to use sleeping pills, you should consult your doctor. A specialist, in case of urgent need, will be able to select the right medicine or medicinal herb, which will protect the baby and his parents from negative consequences.

Separately, it is worth touching on such a topic as prayers and conspiracies. Some people believe in solving problems this way. Nothing bad will happen if a believer prays before going to bed for the health of his child. But it is still worth refusing the recommendations of traditional medicine. After all, even in monasteries, for a long time, in addition to verbal influence, plant-based medicines were used to eliminate various pathologies, including insomnia.

Why does my child go to bed late?

Does your child go to bed late? And all attempts to lay it down earlier just increase the laying time? Does it also happen that a child goes to bed at 11 pm, falling asleep on the floor with toys? Does it happen that the baby only wakes up after a nap at 19:00, and even after 2-3 hours no one can put him to sleep by any means? Our article will help you understand this situation.

Why does my baby fall asleep too late in the evening or late at night?

There may be several reasons for falling asleep late:

  1. Very long daytime nap.

Calculate how much daily sleep your baby gets in total, try to compare it with sleep standards. Analyze whether your child sleeps too much during the day? Because for a quality night's sleep, the distribution of sleep throughout the day is very important. The baby can get enough sleep during the day, so in the evening he is not ready to go to bed so early. What to do? It can be recommended to wake up the little sleepyhead if the daytime nap is prolonged. Or remove excess daytime sleep if it interferes with night sleep.

  1. The waking time before going to sleep at night is very long.

If the baby stays awake for too long, the baby becomes overtired and the body produces the “stress hormone” cortisol, which has such an invigorating effect on the baby that it can be compared to a cup of strong coffee. But under the influence of cortisol, the quality of sleep suffers because it is very poorly excreted from the body, and as a result, the mother observes frequent awakenings at night, early rises, and signs of lack of sleep. Our grandmothers called the effect of the stress hormone with the familiar and familiar word “overnight.” In such a situation, it is important to: monitor the time the child is awake, avoid overtiredness, and if there are signs of fatigue, put the baby to bed.

  1. Overexcitement before bed.

Stormy emotions from bright events, guests, new toys, of course, take the child away from the relaxed state that he needs before bed. Try to exclude such events before bedtime, let the baby receive a charge of positive emotions from the long-awaited toy in the morning. The child’s psyche is not yet so perfect, so adults help calm it down: in the evening, through quiet activities and games, gently move on to bed and sleep.

  1. Parents' lifestyle.

Adults do not like routine, often neglect their sleep, and therefore they themselves go to bed late and put their baby to bed late in the evening or late at night. If you are faced with the fact that your baby is sleeping very poorly, then it’s time to make sleep a priority for the whole family. A routine for a child is familiar, predictable, and therefore associated with safety. Help your child get used to the routine. Remember that first of all, through our example, we teach the child - take care of your sleep, go to bed early!

  1. The baby is waiting for mom or dad from work.

Sometimes it happens. Of course, communication with loved ones is an important factor in the harmonious development and formation of a healthy attachment between parent and child. Therefore, here you need to be flexible and consider options: invite your child to meet dad only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, say “good night” to dad via video Skype, or get up early in the morning to “talk” with loved ones!

What if my child falls asleep too late in the evening?

To solve the problem of going to bed too late, it is important to understand how suitable this regime is for the child?

If you are satisfied with how your baby sleeps at night and during the day. If the baby, even with the late schedule, gets his normal amount of sleep, feels great and is quite active for his age, falls asleep and wakes up in a good mood, does not show signs of lack of sleep, and the late schedule fits into your family concept - congratulations, you are doing well! No need to look for a problem where there is none!

But if you have to put a lot of effort and time into bed, sometimes even up to 2 hours... If you need to persuade the child, rock him to sleep, read 10 fairy tales, involve all the relatives... If you are exhausted and tired, you fall asleep on your own, and the baby is still fiddling with toys or jumps around the apartment. If, after being put to bed for two hours, he still falls asleep, but wakes up screaming several times in the middle of the night... If in the morning, in spite of everything, he wakes up too early or at lunchtime, throws tantrums all day, protests against daytime sleep, while physical activity and appetite have decreased became worse... Evening came and again he went to bed by midnight. If you recognize your situation in this description, know that you are not alone. And think about it, maybe it's time to try switching to early mode.

What is "early mode"?

It is no secret that the consultants of the Sleep, Baby project adhere to the concept of an “early regime” for children. The early regime is not only an early rise, but also an early bed:

  • getting up in the morning between 6:00 and 7:30
  • and going to bed at night between 19:00 and 20:30 - the “sleep window”

Why do we recommend these particular time periods and how suitable are they for all children? Numerous sleep studies have proven that these periods of time are the most favorable for building a comfortable regime in accordance with the biorhythms of the child’s body and the functioning of the hormonal system, in particular, the production of the “sleep hormone” melatonin.

When exactly should your baby sleep at 7:35 pm or 8:15 pm? In fact, the styling intervals indicated are quite wide in 1.5 hour increments, because our recommendations take into account age and individual characteristics. All children are different and each child is special, with its own rhythm of sleep and wakefulness. To build this rhythm comfortably for the baby, parents need to be attentive and patient, observe signs of readiness for sleep, find the golden “sleep window” and gradually switch to a new regime.

Solving sleep problems on your own: a reminder for parents

If sleep disturbances are not associated with any diseases, then parents can cope with the problem on their own. To do this, it is enough to change your daily routine, eliminate irritating and negative factors that cause the development of insomnia.

Advice! First of all, you should be patient - developing habits and skills in a child is a long process. At the same time, you need to strive to remain calm and friendly, since negative emotions are quickly transmitted to the little man.

If a nine-month-old toddler does not sleep well at night, then the following measures will help eliminate the problem.

  • Create comfortable conditions in the bedroom. They include: ventilation of the room, silence, darkness, optimal temperature conditions (19-21 ° C with a humidity of 60-70%).
  • Organize a sleeping place. This should be a crib with an elastic mattress, a comfortable pillow, bedding made from natural fabrics and a minimum of toys.
  • Develop a sleep routine. You should stick to a certain routine, putting your baby to bed at the same time both day and night.
  • Make a schedule of games and rest. 2-3 hours before bedtime, it is necessary to reduce activity, switching the child’s attention to calmer activities. At the same time, you need to dim the lights, reduce the volume of the TV, and switch to a quiet tone of conversation.
  • Adjust your diet. The child should eat several times a day during the day, receive nutritious food, the intake of which must be distributed in such a way that the baby does not go to bed with a full stomach, but at the same time does not experience a feeling of hunger during sleep.
  • Teach your child to fall asleep on his own. To do this, you should put him in bed for 10-15 minutes, leaving him alone. In the first days, he may squirm, cry, express his fear, and demand the presence of adults. Gradually, he will learn to calm down without his mother's help, and at first he will simply doze off, and then fall asleep alone.

Does it ever happen to you that your child takes a long time to fall asleep? You have already done everything as usual, but the baby still won’t fall asleep. Every parent faces this problem at least once. Going to bed for a long time does not always indicate the presence of a specific sleep problem. But if almost every day you have to pat your baby on the back for 30-40 minutes, rock a newborn in your arms for an endless number of minutes, or sit next to your baby and watch him turn from side to side, get up and be ready to stay awake, then it’s worth think that it’s time to solve this problem.

Maybe it's a matter of ritual?

A prolonged ritual does not always indicate problems with falling asleep. When it drags on, the child asks to read him a countless number of fairy tales, or after you enter the bedroom, the baby immediately needs to go to the toilet or drink several times. This cannot be called a problem of long-term bedtime; most likely, the point is that the baby needs to set the boundaries of what is permitted and the problem will be quickly resolved. Depending on the age of the baby, the ritual lasts from 2-20 minutes.

How long should a baby fall asleep?

If, after you entered the bedroom, you set your baby up for sleep and after the lights went out, the child fell asleep within 5-20 minutes, you can safely say that you have no problems with falling asleep for a long time. The normal time to fall asleep for both an adult and a small child is considered to be a time interval of 20 minutes. A long bedtime can be defined as any fall asleep that lasts more than 20 minutes.

Why can a child take a long time to fall asleep?

  • Lack of ritual . Even from birth, babies understand as much speech as they understand the actions their parents perform with them. Ritual is one of such effective ways to show the baby that it is time to sleep. Over time, as the child grows, the ritual will lengthen and the actions will also change. Almost every child needs help getting into the mood for sleep. It is very rare that a child will be able to fall asleep if he is simply put in bed and told “sleep.”
  • Increased anxiety . It is especially felt in moments of crisis and regression. The baby feels that you will leave and does not want to let you go, because he is afraid to be left alone. During peak periods of crisis, you will need to spend more time with your baby and perhaps provide additional assistance with bedtime, as well as being there until he falls asleep.
  • Fears . This reason usually applies to children older than 12 months. Night terrors are accompanied by screams and hysterics when going to bed. It is worth finding out what exactly the child is afraid of. Perhaps he saw something scary on TV or had a terrible dream. If the reason is bad dreams, then the child will in every possible way delay the moment of falling asleep so as not to see this dream again. If such a problem recurs systematically, it is better to turn to specialists for qualified help. When it comes to constantly watching TV, it is worth limiting the time your baby spends in front of it.
  • Problems with the daily routine . In this case, we are talking about an imbalance of sleep and wakefulness during the day. The child is awake too little and sleeps too much. Or an absolutely mirror situation occurs in which the baby over-walks and by the time he goes to bed he simply cannot fall asleep because his nervous system is overloaded.
  • Low levels of sleep hormone . Often found in newborns aged 0-3 months. After birth, the baby easily falls asleep for some time, since melatonin (sleep hormone) transmitted to him from his mother continues to work. But after a few days, his work fades away, and the child needs more and more help in order to fall asleep. Soon, the child’s body will begin to produce sleep hormones on its own, and the child will begin to fall asleep faster with minimal assistance.
  • No daytime walks . It may also have a negative effect on the process of falling asleep. There are cases when a child spends little time in the sun during the day. Because of this, his rhythm of the day may slip, and the child will physically not be able to fall asleep at the allotted bedtime. To avoid this, walk with your baby during the daytime. Fresh air enriches the brain with oxygen, and therefore babies fall asleep easier and sleep more soundly.
  • Caffeine . As it turns out, it is found not only in coffee, but also in sweet soda and chocolate. If a child eats or drinks a large dose of caffeine, this leads to overstimulation of the baby's nervous system and, as a result, problems with sleep. Keep track of what is included in the drinks and foods your baby consumes. When a mother is breastfeeding her newborn baby, she should limit the consumption of coffee and coffee-containing products.
  • Overexcitement . At the moment of wakefulness or throughout the day, the child received many emotions. This could be the arrival of guests or a visit to the supermarket. In this case, the nervous system may also prevent the baby from falling asleep calmly and quickly. The baby will need better relaxation before bed so that he can fall asleep as quickly as possible and without resistance.
  • Health problems . Especially at night, babies may suffer from itching and pain that occurs when teething. Also, various diseases make themselves felt precisely in the evening.
  • Wrong time to be awake . The baby is simply not ready to sleep, as he may still spend time without sleep. It's worth watching and giving him this opportunity.

To help your baby fall asleep faster, you first need to start by checking external conditions, and also eliminate any factors that may distract the baby from the process of falling asleep. Download the “COMFORT AND SLEEP” CHECKLIST and believe me, point by point, to eliminate all external factors.

Several ways to help your baby fall asleep quickly:

  • Adjust the air temperature . The most comfortable temperature for sleeping is from 18-21 C. In the summer, this can be done using an air conditioner; in winter, you can turn down the heating.
  • Curtains . The room where the baby sleeps should be as dark as possible. Before each nap and at night, you must close the curtains. Darkness will help activate the hormone melatonin, and the child will be able to fall asleep faster. In the summer, it is important that the room remains as dark as possible in the morning, since it begins to get lighter at 4 am. To do this, you can purchase blackout blinders, dark blinds or roller blinds.
  • Ritual . Come up with certain actions that you will do before each baby’s sleep. For example, singing a lullaby, turning on the humidifier, closing the curtains, feeding the baby and putting him to sleep. All actions must be the same and consistent day after day.
  • Relaxation . It should be done 10-60 minutes before bedtime. Stop all active games and activities that excite the child, turn off all gadgets and TV, and spend this time as calmly as possible. When the baby is still very young, it is necessary to identify actions that relax him, for example, stroking, mother's singing, white noise, looking at books.
  • Signs of fatigue . Pay close attention to your baby's sleep signals. Some kids clearly show signs of fatigue (rubbing their eyes, yawning, freezing), while other kids hide them in order to stay with you longer and not go to sleep.
