Pregnancy, children > Child development > When can a girl be placed on the advice of Dr. Komarovsky, where is the harm and where is the benefit?
Congratulations, you're having a girl! Very little time will pass from the birth of the little baby, and she will already confidently roll over on her tummy and touchingly kick her legs until she finally crawls.
For her, there will be a fascinating new world around her that will need to be examined and touched. So the next stage after the long-awaited rollover is to learn to sit. Let’s dwell on this in more detail, since there are all sorts of theories, true and not so true, regarding the early sitting of girls. When can a girl be imprisoned and what did Dr. Komarovsky say about this?
The most terrible myth about girls sitting down early
There is an opinion that due to the early placement of babies aged 4 months or less, in the future this will lead to the inability to conceive a child. This is due to the fact that supposedly with such early practices, the uterus bends, which makes pregnancy very difficult.
Mothers of little princesses can breathe easy - this is a myth. The predisposition to such deformation is hereditary or the result of inflammation.
However, this does not mean that if you start placing girls early, there will be no problems. Although there are two traditional camps “for” and “against”, it is categorically not recommended to sit down a child until he is naturally ready. Many pediatric doctors have this opinion, and there are several good reasons for this.
Let us turn to the answer of the famous pediatrician, Dr. Evgeniy Komarovsky.
According to Komarovsky, a child’s development should proceed in its natural way. First, the child learns to roll over and, having mastered this skill, moves on to crawling, first on his stomach, and then on all fours. During this period, the mother can help the girl practice a little, lifting and lowering her by the arms for just a few seconds, but that’s all.
Contrary to the advice of experienced grandmothers, girls should never be forced into custody while they are so small. The thing is that with an unprepared back, when the child sits up early, a colossal load is placed on the spine, creating the potential for its curvature.
This is fraught with problems with posture and back in general in the future. When a child is born, his spine has an arched shape, and it becomes straight, like that of an adult, as he grows and develops. So, placing little girls in pillows disrupts the natural development of the spine and, as a result, the entire “chassis” of the baby as a whole, notes Komarovsky.

What should precede sitting down?
Is it possible to force a child to sit down? In adults, the spine has natural curves. But babies are born with a straight spinal column; their curves develop later. The muscles of a child's back are not able to support the spine. This means the spine is vulnerable. Therefore, until a certain age, you cannot sit down your baby.
At 2-3 months, the baby begins to raise his head while lying on his tummy, thus the cervical curvature of the spine begins to form. When the baby masters independent attempts to sit up, the thoracic spine is formed. Well, when a child learns to stand on his feet and walk, the spine takes on the shape that is familiar to us. Therefore, correct posture will be formed in the baby only when he masters all the stages on his own.
If you start sitting down prematurely, the load on the spine increases. The muscular frame does not yet work and does not support the spinal column. The consequences of illiterate actions by adults can lead to disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The negative impact affects the condition of internal organs and respiratory organs.
The back muscles are strengthened during the baby's motor activity: holding the head, turning over, moving the arms and legs. These seemingly insignificant actions help strengthen your back muscles. And strengthening these muscles prepares the baby to sit down.
If a girl tends to sit down earlier
Many mothers also note the earlier development of their daughters. For example, it is not so rare for a baby to try to sit up on her own before the age of 4 months.
The question arises: is it worth limiting such a need at such an early age?
Pediatricians insist that it is definitely worth it, since no matter how the child develops, his bones and musculoskeletal system are still not adapted for such a heavy load.
However, there is a chance that your baby will be discouraged from learning to sit at all. Here you can advise distracting the child with other interesting things, for example, play mats and tunnels.
By the way, Dr. Komarovsky specifically emphasizes that the most basic strengthening function for the back is crawling, not sitting. That’s why all kinds of games to develop this skill are so useful. Let the baby try to bring some toy at her mother's request - she will strengthen her back and have fun with her mother.
The more a child crawls, the faster he will eventually be able to learn to sit without the help of adults.
If the girl is still very much interested in exploring the world while sitting, the mother must first of all secure the space around her daughter, avoiding falls and injuries, and, of course, make sure that the baby gets plenty of rest between her exercises and devotes some time to them.
Another option for solving the curiosity of babies is to create a reclining position for them. There is practically no load, and the young researcher has a decent amount of space in her field of vision.
What can help mom: walkers, jumpers and other devices
At this point, the topic also touches on all kinds of helpers for development. These include:
- Walkers
- Jumpers
- Sun loungers
- Swings, etc.
You always want to help your child and give him many opportunities to explore the world around him, including from different angles. The best choice in this regard is sun loungers and swings. Even the simplest model has a reclining design, which does not put additional stress on the baby’s spine.

But jumpers and walkers do not meet this requirement, the load on the back only increases in them, so neither Dr. Komarovsky nor many other pediatricians and orthopedists recommend using them until the child sits down on his own and even learns to stand, and it is necessary placing your foot in the correct position.
If you still decide to introduce your starlet to them, then be sure to make sure that the girl does not spend more than an hour a day in them.
Who will sit down first
Not a single pediatrician can tell you the exact age at which the boy will sit down. This period is influenced not so much by gender as by the readiness of the baby, which depends on many factors.
- Physical training. If the parents did gymnastics, swimming, or massage with the baby, the child will learn to hold his head up, rise on his arms, and sit earlier.
- Temperament. Phlegmatic, calm children often lag behind their fidgety peers.
- Weight. Mobility and muscle development depend on the weight of the baby; moreover, the load on the spine is much higher, so it will be more difficult for the boy to sit in an upright position.
So, a physically developed, active “thin guy” will sit up at 5 months, and his peer “chubby” has the right to master the skill up to 9 months.
A premature baby has 2 months left to catch up with the rest in development, which means he will sit up much later.
What and how to carry a child - kangaroos, slings, strollers and car seats
The types of vehicles for children deserve special mention.
Remembering walkers and jumpers, let's pay attention to the stroller - walking options without an adjustable backrest to a lying position are best left until better times, but, frankly, such models are not particularly popular.
But what if traveling in a stroller is undesirable, inconvenient or simply impossible? Kangaroos and slings come to the rescue. Komarovsky claims that a child can be actively carried in a sling from the age of one month, and in a kangaroo backpack from 2-3 months. The harm in this case is low compared to the convenience and mobility of this method of transportation.
You need to learn how to tie a sling correctly. It is very important to make sure that the baby is tightly attached to the mother’s body and that she is comfortable, to avoid, if possible, a vertical position and not to get carried away with wearing it for a long time in a sling, that is, going to the park and walking around it all day is not a good idea. In addition, it is best to practice at home to understand that the baby is happy with everything in the sling and it exactly suits him.
With car seats today everything is much simpler. In any store and on any website there is a huge assortment, including for children from birth. These include organically modeled infant carriers to match the anatomy of newborns, and chairs with a range of several months, but which come with a special insert for very little ones. So there will definitely be something to choose from.

What the statistics say
During the first year of life, the baby's development is characterized by intensity. Achievements of this age replace each other. Pediatricians have developed child development plans that outline the expected achievements of children by month and week. The average stats look like this:
- at 6 months the baby is able to sit with support;
- at 7 months - already without it;
- at 8 months – sits up independently from a lying position or lies down from a sitting position.
But since each child is individual, each has its own development path and its own time frame for achievement. Therefore, minor deviations from the indicators are also considered normal. So, in most cases, children begin to sit independently at 6 months of age. Well, if a baby starts doing this at 4 months or at 8 months, this is also not considered a pathology.
Here's what Dr. Komarovsky says about this:
When girls are ready to sit up on their own and how to help them with this
How long does it take for a girl to sit up on her own and does she need help with this? The ability to hold your back appears around 7 months, and children sit up independently at about 8 months.
It is necessary to take into account the developmental characteristics of each child, so the numbers are conditional, but not very different from the real ones.
Most often, babies sit down from a “on all fours” position, plopping down on their side and taking a vertical position.
At first, they can spend a few seconds in this form, and then they lean to the side and fall. It’s worth being patient - as the back gets used to the new position, everything will work out better and better for the baby.
This is where she can and should be helped: supported, held by the hands. A restorative massage is not excluded and is highly recommended; in principle, it is useful in many ways at any age. Over time, the girl will begin to sit down and sit for a long time with a straight back and without outside help.
The main thing is not to rush
Not so long ago, opinions on early sitting up differed greatly, both among parents themselves and among specialists. With a deeper and more detailed study of children under one year old and new discoveries in the field of pediatric medicine, the opinions of experts are gradually converging on one thing: a confident “yes” for natural development.
If the newly born princess does not have any serious pathologies, she will certainly learn to sit with a little, and, importantly, timely help from her parents. You just need to be patient and enjoy every moment of your child’s life, because they grow so quickly.

10/15/2017 at 00:50I never understood this excitement and panic about how early girls can be sent to school. Now everything is aimed at the natural physical development of children - without children, etc. It’s strange that in our time such questions still arise) Thank you for writing the truth about this, otherwise your grandmothers will advise you)))

I didn’t plant my daughter myself. We waited patiently for the baby to master this skill. And this happened at almost seven months. First she learned to get on all fours, and then to sit on her butt
