Why does a one-month-old baby not sleep all day - what to do?

Features of sleep in newborns

A newborn and baby during the first months of life spend most of their time sleeping. Of course, their sleep is not the same as that of older children:

  • The little person’s body does not yet understand what time of day it is outside, so babies can sleep all day, but at night they can be awake for several hours in a row;
  • During the first months of life, a baby can stay awake for no more than 1 hour at a time. At the same time, he spends most of this time feeding. For many mothers, the day consists of continuous feedings and putting the baby to bed. This period passes quickly, but for now you need to be patient;

  • The baby is able to fall asleep in any conditions, despite possible noise or bright light in the room. But he can wake up just as quickly. This is due to the fact that now he does not yet have that phase of deep sleep, which is inherent in an adult. ;
  • It is normal for a child under 1 year of age not to sleep through the night. Usually children wake up to eat and immediately fall asleep again.

But this does not happen for everyone and not always. After all, every person, no matter how small, is individual. An immature nervous system does not allow you to sleep strictly according to a schedule. The child’s rhythms are constantly changing, getting confused, and the routine is usually very chaotic.

Features of a newborn's sleep

Human sleep consists of several phases. After a period of falling asleep, the alternation of deep, so-called slow sleep, and shallow or REM sleep begins. In babies, the slow-wave sleep phase begins approximately half an hour after falling asleep. If in adults the fast phase is no more than a quarter, then in a newborn it takes up more than half of the total sleep duration. During this period, the baby sleeps very lightly; he can wake up under the influence of the most insignificant stimuli. During the shallow sleep phase, people dream. The child may make involuntary movements with his arms and legs, shudder, move his eyeballs under closed eyelids, and change his facial expression. The duration of a complete sleep cycle in an infant is short, less than one hour, so the child often wakes up.

As the baby grows, an internal clock develops, circadian rhythms develop, and differences in the perception of day and night appear. Although the total sleep time decreases, the ratio of fast and slow sleep changes in favor of the latter, which allows the baby to sleep much more calmly.

Why does a one-month-old baby sleep poorly during the day?

Let's consider the main reasons, which are divided into two large groups: external, that is, not related to diseases, and internal.

External reasons:

  • discomfort. It is most often caused by hunger or a wet diaper;
  • noise. Although it is believed that it should not disturb children, if neighbors are doing repairs or someone is screaming under the window, this can hardly accompany normal falling asleep;
  • physical and emotional overstimulation. He can be suspected by his overly active behavior, crying and persistent reluctance to sleep;
  • bad microclimate. Optimal temperature and humidity conditions: 19-21 degrees, 50-70%. It is extremely important to ventilate more often so that the room where the baby rests is filled with fresh air. ;
  • too light in the room;
  • lack of daily routine.

Internal reasons:

  • imperfection of the nervous system. This phenomenon is temporary, due to the fact that the baby, who has survived childbirth, which is a huge stress, simply wants to feel safe all the time, that is, to be in his mother’s arms. But since she cannot hold the baby all the time, he wakes up at the slightest attempt to put him to sleep;
  • consequences of difficult childbirth or trauma received during birth;
  • neurological diseases;
  • imperfection of the digestive system. A mother who is breastfeeding may not eat properly, sometimes the child is simply overfed or the pediatrician’s recommendation to supplement the baby with water is ignored, and constant pain in the tummy and accumulated gases are unlikely to contribute to normal sleep.

Symptoms for which you should visit a specialist (pediatrician, neurologist):

  • the total number of hours of sleep per day is less than 15;
  • every 5-10 minutes the baby wakes up, even if he had been awake for a long time;
  • there are constant signs of anxiety for no reason;
  • up to 4-5 hours the baby is active without sleep breaks;
  • the process of going to bed is accompanied by whims - getting the baby to sleep is extremely difficult.

Sleep norms for a one-month-old baby

Babies sleep on average 18-20 hours a day. These hours stretch across day and night. Usually the child sleeps for 1.5-2.5 hours, waking up for feeding. He has to eat often, since his stomach is small, milk is absorbed quickly. Some parents face a problem when their one-month-old baby does not sleep during the day. One of your relatives or friends may say that there is nothing wrong with this, and if the child does not sleep well during the day, he will sleep well at night. In reality this is not the case.

Children's sleep cannot be compared with adults. After all, during the first year of life, the baby’s body grows and develops at a very high rate, quickly adapts to the world around it, and therefore needs a lot of sleep.

Sleep norms for children under one year old are presented in the table:

You should talk about sleep disorders if:

  • it is impossible to put the baby to sleep within 4-5 hours;
  • total sleep time per day is less than 15 hours;
  • sleep is accompanied by convulsions and breathing problems;
  • the child wakes up every 5-10 minutes.

If your one-month-old baby does not sleep well during the day, you should pay close attention to him. Perhaps he is sick. In any case, it is worth showing your baby to the doctor, since some diseases can pass without pronounced external symptoms.

Under no circumstances should you give your baby any sedatives or other medications without a doctor’s prescription. They can lead to serious disorders in the developing organism. Even homeopathic remedies (based on medicinal herbs) can cause a severe allergic reaction.

What do you need for a good sleep?

If you want your child to sleep well, try to create all the necessary conditions for this:

  1. The room in which you are going to put your child to sleep should be well ventilated and should not be hot. The optimal room temperature is 20-22 °C. If your apartment is too hot, be sure to ventilate it before putting your baby to bed. On this topic, read the article: Temperature in the room for a newborn >>>;
  2. In the first months of life, babies do not yet react to noise. But still try to avoid sharp sounds, they can not only wake up, but also scare the baby;
  3. Another important question is where to put the baby? The easiest way for both you and the baby is for the baby to sleep next to you. A large matrimonial bed or a baby cot moved next to the parent's bed will be a good solution to the problem of you getting enough sleep and feeding your baby at night;

Important! When a 1-month-old baby doesn’t sleep well, it’s important for you to get enough sleep at night, because during the day the baby will be entirely in your care.

  1. It is equally important to avoid excessive fatigue.

Causes of poor sleep

More than one month may pass after birth while your baby adapts to his new life. Therefore, it is so important that his sleep is complete and allows him to fully restore his strength for further discoveries. Why is my baby one month old, but he doesn’t sleep well and cries? This question worries many young parents. If you can be considered one of them, try to understand the reasons for this condition:

  • Perhaps the baby does not sleep enough during the day and wakes up often. So he may be too tired during the day and by the time he sleeps at night he will be too overexcited. This is a fairly common cause of poor children's sleep;
  • Quality sleep is only possible when all the baby's needs are met. If he is hungry, he is hot or cold, his diaper needs to be changed, etc., then it is not surprising that the baby cannot sleep and is capricious.
  • The air quality in your apartment can affect your sleep. It can be stuffy, dusty or too dry. Sometimes regular airing is enough for the child to fall asleep quickly and soundly;
  • Many babies experience colic, which naturally interferes with their ability to sleep.
  • Sometimes the reason for lack of sleep is related to the individual characteristics of the child’s body. If the child feels well during the waking period, plays and is not capricious, then this is probably the reason.

If a child begins to sleep poorly within a month, then you need to start with a general assessment of the child’s health. If the baby eats well and gains weight, he is in a good mood, then there is no reason to worry. But it is necessary to work on improving sleep.

We recommend reading: Review of the book “Secrets of a Sleepy Mom.”

In addition, it is worth paying attention to how the baby sleeps. If in his sleep he often shudders, spins restlessly, or even you notice convulsions, then you should show him to a neurologist who can understand the situation and, if necessary, prescribe treatment.

Heat indoors

The most common reason for a child's poor sleep day and night. When the room is too hot, babies feel extremely uncomfortable. Heat exchange in infants is much more intense than in adults, so the air in the room where the baby is located should be cool and fresh. In addition, excessive heat increases the risk of infant colic, as well as unpleasant and painful skin irritations.

Regular ventilation, installation of air conditioning or modern heating systems with the ability to regulate air temperature will help eliminate the cause. If it is not possible to install new batteries or an air conditioner, then it is enough to simply leave the window slightly open both day and night. Of course, it is necessary to ensure that there is no strong draft and a direct flow of fresh air does not blow on the baby.

The optimal room temperature in the nursery is 18-20°.

Often the child does not sleep and cries due to colic

Colic is a common occurrence. Up to 80% of children are susceptible to this disease. You can make sure that your baby is suffering from tummy pain by looking at the following signs:

  • The tummy is hard and tense.
  • The baby wiggles its legs and tries to pull them towards its stomach.

Today there are enough drugs that help relieve infant colic. They can be used in consultation with a pediatrician. Most of these medications come in the form of sweetish syrups; children drink them with pleasure, but they must be used carefully for children prone to allergic reactions.

The correct temperature in the room and adequate feeding portions (you cannot overfeed the baby) will also help reduce the risk of colic.

Newborn has difficulty sleeping at night if he is hungry

Newborn babies require feeding by the hour. This is especially difficult to do at night, since the mother, tired during the day, may simply oversleep during the feeding hour. Your baby will let you know he's hungry by crying loudly.

If your baby often wakes up from hunger, then you should pay attention to the amount of milk during breastfeeding or the amount of formula during artificial feeding. Perhaps the child does not have enough of the portion that the mother offers

The child may wake up because the diapers or diapers are wet

Most often, a month-old baby simply does not notice wet diapers. However, with age, this factor becomes annoying and the baby cries when a wet diaper causes him discomfort. This can happen both during the day and during night sleep. Replacing a diaper or diaper will solve the problem, and the baby will continue to sleep peacefully.

Noise or too much light in the room

During the day, the child may not sleep if the room is too bright. This is annoying and uncomfortable. You can close the curtains, use blinds or shutters. You also need to monitor the noise level. You should not teach complete silence, especially if the baby is forced to sleep in the same room with adults or other children. However, loud music, screaming, and harsh sounds should be avoided while the baby is sleeping.

Natural causes: physiological night crying, shuddering

A newborn baby does not sleep well if his mother is not nearby. This is a proven fact. In order to determine whether their mother is nearby, babies even have a special physiological mechanism - scanning crying. A little sniffling and whimpering in your sleep is normal. This is how the child determines whether the mother is nearby or not. If the mother’s soothing strokes, hugs, and voices are not followed, then the baby will cry in full force. It’s impossible to be with your child all the time, but you shouldn’t leave him for a long time either. This way you can calm the baby in time, preventing him from completely waking up.

It’s good if the baby’s crib is close to the parents’ bed at night. This way, the mother can calm the baby without getting up, simply by stroking him.

You can combat shuddering in your sleep by swaddling. Many pediatricians do not advise swaddling babies so that physical development and adaptation to their own body occurs faster and more harmoniously. However, while sleeping, you can lightly swaddle the baby in the area of the arms. This way he will sleep more peacefully and will not wake himself up with a start.

Features of baby crying

The baby's first cry is his cry immediately after birth. It is a protest against separation from his mother. Based on the strength of this cry, doctors draw conclusions about the viability of the child and his state of health. A newborn cries often, but over time he begins to cry less often, and the mother can already understand what exactly the baby requires.

It is important to know that crying is harmful to the baby! It does not train the lungs and does not strengthen character, but on the contrary, it weakens the nervous system and deprives one of confidence in the safety and friendliness of the world around us. Prolonged crying can lead to the formation of an umbilical hernia.

Older children may cry due to whims, but this does not apply to one-month-old babies. The crying of a child who is only a month old is a reaction to a real problem. Therefore, you need to react to it immediately - take the baby in your arms, rock, soothe.

Should I wake up my newborn at night to feed him?

The opinions of pediatricians vary: some say that this should not be done categorically, while others recommend not exceeding a three-hour interval between meals.
In addition, night feeding stimulates lactation and is especially important for women who have little milk.

The duration of daytime sleep in 1-month-old babies usually ranges from forty minutes to 1.5-2 hours. At night, most newborns are able to withstand much longer without food (up to 3-5 hours).

What to do if your baby cries and doesn’t sleep all day?

If a one-month-old baby does not sleep all day, this becomes a real problem - the mother does not rest, cannot do household chores, which means that the state of her nervous system is significantly disturbed and her strength is lost.

What can be done? First, you need to calm down yourself . If possible, at least for a short time hand the baby over to dad or grandma and rest a little. Secondly, it is necessary to exclude the influence of external factors, which we wrote about above.

If this does not bring results, then you need to pay closer attention to the baby’s health. Usually, a consultation with a neurologist and pediatrician is sufficient, who can recommend medications to eliminate certain symptoms that prevent the baby from sleeping.

One month old baby doesn't sleep much

There is only one reason for poor sleep with proper sleep patterns and the absence of irritating factors, and it is also the main one. Only a hungry one-month-old baby sleeps little, and it is necessary to find out: does he have enough breast milk? To do this, several control feedings are performed followed by weighing.

If fears are confirmed, feeding needs to be adjusted. Although the introduction of complementary foods is not yet recommended at this age, in exceptional cases it is allowed according to the recommendations of the local pediatrician.

Without eating enough, a month-old baby sleeps little because he wakes up from hunger and demands an additional portion. To prevent early falling asleep in such cases, it is recommended to feed with the second breast. Or, in extreme cases, when there is not enough milk, use an artificial formula, which should only be served from a spoon. Otherwise, you can forget about breastfeeding.

Other lack of sleep

Since the baby has not yet developed a routine, any lack of sleep can hide a developing pathology, so it is necessary to constantly monitor the baby’s condition: how he eats, how he feels, how he behaves.

We recommend reading: Sleeping in the fresh air: what happens to the body?

Lack of sleep at night

Sometimes children don't sleep at night. This is due to the fact that after birth, children have not yet developed their own individual rhythm, and they simply do not care when to rest. Until the age of 1 month, the baby may wake up frequently, and this will be the norm. A child at this age eats regularly, which is why he needs to interrupt his sleep. Sometimes children confuse day and night. To correct this, parents need to wake up the baby more often during the day and do various exercises with him for development and relaxation. Such frequent awakenings will force him to sleep deeper and longer at night.

Long sleep

The normal duration of rest during 1 month of life is 19 hours a day. During this time, the baby develops the brain, nervous system, and also produces growth hormone.

You need to worry when the baby sleeps a lot and eats little, and weakness is noticeable in his condition.

Doctors advise taking the child out of a sleepy state more often, creating frequent short-term situations when the baby eats, so that he receives the amount of food he needs in parts.

If you do not do this, but allow the baby to sleep a lot by reducing nutrition, dehydration may occur, jaundice may begin, and the concentration of glucose in the blood may decrease. When a baby gains weight normally and eats little, it means that this amount of food is enough for him, and you shouldn’t wake him up again.

Restless holiday

While sleeping in her crib away from her mother, the baby may experience restless movements, which also interfere with healthy rest. However, not every turn indicates pathology. For example, if a baby makes some sounds, jerks his limbs, changes his facial expression, it means he is immersed in the rapid phase of sleep, which is absolutely normal for any person.

If a child cries and screams in his sleep, you need to wake him up, hold him close and begin to give him a soothing, relaxing massage. This will help the baby calm down quickly and be able to go back to sleep later.

But sometimes convulsions occur, which are a pathological condition; they are characterized by rhythmic trembling or chills. If you have such symptoms, you should contact a neurologist.

Specifics of sleep in children

When a child sleeps, his sleep consists of absolutely the same phases as that of an adult.
We are talking about falling asleep, REM sleep, superficial sleep, slow sleep and deep sleep. In this case, the baby and the adult differ only in the duration of each phase. If, for example, a man or woman spends up to two hours on each phase, then a child needs definitely less time. Each stage lasts no more than 30 minutes. Moreover, in the first few months of life, the baby sleeps in REM sleep (from 60 to 80 percent of the total sleep time). Gradually, this figure decreases to 50 percent and reaches 20 percent in adulthood.

Children fall asleep and immediately enter the shallow phase of sleep. At the same time, the baby shudders, his eyes move under his eyelids, his breathing is intermittent and irregular. It is at this stage that the child begins to dream.

In addition, the brain processes the information received throughout the day (this is how future life skills are formed). A newborn or an older child comes out of this phase quite easily and very quickly.

After 20 minutes, slow-wave sleep occurs and is accompanied by:

  • decreased heart rate;
  • decreasing the number of inhalations and exhalations;
  • muscle relaxation;
  • unclenching the fists;
  • sweat separation and so on.

Getting out of this phase is very difficult. If the baby wakes up, he will most likely be capricious and feel tired and not getting enough sleep. Slow, deep sleep is the ideal time to move him to your bed (if the baby has fallen asleep in your arms or in another room).

What to do if your baby has confused day with night

One month old baby doesn't sleep all day

If an infant begins to stay awake at night and sleep during the day, it is necessary, first of all, to determine the cause of such a failure in the regime.

The baby mixed up day and night

If these are symptoms of painful conditions (colic, pain, runny nose), consultation with a pediatrician and prescribed adequate treatment will help.

When health problems are excluded, the most effective, but time-consuming advice is to not let the child fall asleep during the day. If the problem concerns children of the first year of life, it is enough to temporarily remove one of the daytime naps so that he does not sleep for at least 4 hours before the start of night sleep.

In general, from birth it is recommended to teach the baby to distinguish between day and night, developing in him the concept that day is when it is light and noisy, and night is dark and quiet.

At 1 month

Newborn babies benefit greatly from “white noise” (similar to intrauterine sounds, which the baby still associates with peace and pleasure), on its own or superimposed on quiet, calm classical music.

Complete darkness is necessary for proper sleep, so it is undesirable to use even the dimmest nightlights. They can be turned on when the mother gets up to feed the baby. It is also advisable to have thick curtains or blinds on the windows so that the child is not disturbed by bright street light.

At 3 months

Often a 3-month-old baby begins to suffer from colic, so at this age, for a comfortable night's sleep, it is very important to follow the diet: do not overfeed at night and provide enough moisture.

Overheating is also unacceptable, so the air in the room where the baby sleeps must be cooled. Walking in a stroller is very good for falling asleep at night - many babies rock well.

Kids fall asleep well after an evening walk in the fresh air.

If a 3-month-old baby sleeps all day, it is necessary to organize comfortable conditions for him to have a good night's sleep and fall asleep easily: the baby should not be overfed, not wrapped up, the bed and pajamas should be very soft and not restrict his body.

You can use aromatherapy (in the form of a few drops of mint oil in an aroma lamp or when bathing a child), and also place a sachet pillow with “sleepy” herbs near the crib.

At 4 months

At this age, a small child is more and more awake during the daytime, therefore, when confusion between day and night occurs, he should be loaded as much as possible during daylight hours, while it is advisable to minimize daytime sleep (only in case of visible severe fatigue). To keep your toddler active, you can use:

  • funny and playful children's songs;
  • do a light massage and turn over on your tummy;
  • new toys;
  • constant conversations, nursery rhymes, jokes.

For older children, you can increase physical activity: this includes gymnastics (according to age), outdoor games, swimming and walks.

Note! After consultation with a pediatrician, it is possible to use soothing teas and decoctions for better sleep in the evenings.

What to do if your newborn doesn't sleep

For most babies who cannot fall asleep or sleep very briefly, it is enough to eliminate external stimuli: soothe them by gently rocking them in their arms or in the crib, or sing a lullaby.
It is necessary to check whether the diaper (diapers) are wet, whether the baby is cold, and ventilate the room before going to bed. If you ensure peace in the first phase, the transition from shallow to deep sleep will take place for the baby without waking up.

If a newborn is unable to sleep due to colic, a gentle tummy massage, the use of carminatives, or a warm bath with herbs will help.

If your baby's night sleep is disturbed, try to accustom him to a daytime sleep schedule and play with him more during periods of wakefulness. Usually this situation resolves itself as the baby's brain matures, and by about 1 month the baby begins to understand the difference between day and night.

Some babies are helped to fall asleep during the day by sleeping with their mother or falling asleep at their mother's breast.

In all cases, parental confidence, as well as a calm, friendly environment, will help ensure the child has a healthy, sound sleep.

It is possible to consider that a baby’s sleep is seriously disturbed only when the child does not sleep all day for 1 month, and also if he sleeps less than 15 hours a day and wakes up after 15-20 minutes.

Daytime sleep disturbance in infants

Why doesn't the baby sleep during the day?

Often the reasons for a baby's poor sleep are health problems. If the baby does not fall asleep for a long time, cries loudly, or bends over, then you need to consult a doctor for advice. The pediatrician should refer the child to a somnologist (a specialist in sleep disorders) to identify the causes of the sleep disorder. If such a doctor is not available at the clinic, a pediatrician can make the diagnosis instead. A check with a neurologist can reveal the presence of nervous system disorders, which are often associated with birth injuries.

Causes of whims and crying of a baby

The most common reason for childhood insomnia, endless whims and tears can be intestinal dysfunction. After overfeeding, the fragile ventricle does not have time to digest food (although the infant’s body absorbs mother’s milk quite quickly and easily). In such cases, the baby begins to hiccup and sometimes burp. Therefore, the baby must be tightly swaddled and held in an upright position - in a “column”, so that the air he swallows during feeding can escape. This most often happens to babies who are bottle-fed. They quickly suck milk from a bottle, with which they swallow portions of air.

Other disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (gastrointestinal tract) of the baby, which can deprive the baby and mother of sleep and rest for a long time:

  • bloating;
  • constipation;
  • intestinal colic.

The baby may not sleep for a long time if he is worried about otitis media, diathesis, runny nose and fever.

Sometimes the cause of sleep disturbance in an infant is rickets, associated with a deficiency of vitamin D in the body. The baby has trouble falling asleep, shudders and cries in his sleep. In addition, he sweats a lot during sleep and feeding.

Causes of disturbed sleep in infants

Sleeping in the fresh air

Many parents notice that their baby doesn’t sleep well during the day in his crib at home, but falls asleep instantly outside. Until the baby turns 4 months old, you can take advantage of this situation to develop a sleep pattern for him. To do this, you should go for a walk down the street with your baby at the same time until he falls asleep, and then just return home and put him to sleep in his crib.

In the future, you will gradually have to get rid of the habit of sleeping on the street; to do this, you can use the following tips:

  1. Put your baby to bed at the same time you were walking outside.
  2. Monitor his fatigue and desire to rest.
  3. Come up with a daily action, the repetition of which will indicate that it is time to sleep.
  4. We should not forget about a pleasant and comfortable environment.
  5. Ventilate the room more often so that there is enough oxygen in it, just like outside. But when loud, sharp sounds are heard outside, it is necessary to close the window, as they can frighten the baby and disrupt his mood for rest.

Normalization of daytime sleep

Why is daytime rest so important? Sleeping during the day is a very important element of healthy child development. Lack of rest leads to overexcitation of the baby’s nervous system and also causes fatigue.

This can lead to a rough night's sleep. Therefore, it is very important to teach your baby to sleep during the daytime.

To do this, you must adhere to the following rules:

  1. Monitor your baby regularly: when he shows that he wants to sleep, he needs to be placed comfortably in the crib. Even if the baby cries, it is best not to leave him to fall asleep in his mother’s arms, as he will get used to it, and then it will be very difficult to put him to bed. It’s better to just be there as the baby falls asleep, stroking him or singing a lullaby. This place also contributes to the development of a conditioned reflex for rest: the baby begins to understand that he needs to sleep in his crib.
  2. A strict daily routine will help stabilize your sleep. It is necessary to do everything literally hourly in the same place in order to develop the baby’s habit of resting in his crib. Psychologists recommend that before resting, you always say kind words to your baby, for example: “it’s time for bayushki.” In this case, you should say the same phrase every time so that the baby gets used to it and knows what it means.
  3. If a child falls asleep in a crib for a long time, you need to be patient and be with him during these moments.
  4. Bathing and a relaxing massage will also promote sound sleep.
  5. When a baby does not sleep well, in order to prepare him for rest, you should refrain from active play with the child and from strong emotions 1 hour before bedtime.
  6. Fresh air relaxes children, allowing them to fall asleep faster, which is why it is good to walk with your child outside before swimming.

When a baby does not sleep well all day, this is a reason for parents to carefully monitor its development and health. In the case when the baby is in a good mood, actively explores the world around him, eats willingly, but sleeps little (mostly on the street), there is no reason to worry. But if he cries a lot and loudly, moves his arms and legs randomly, eats little and reluctantly, then something is bothering him. To exclude the development of diseases, you should consult a doctor.

When can you start instilling good sleep habits in your baby?

You can start building the foundation for good sleep habits very early. But don't rush into learning to fall asleep on your own. All techniques for teaching yourself to fall asleep on your own are effective only after 6 months.

But at least in the first 2 weeks, we advise you not to think about any rules or regimes at all.

At this age, the child usually falls asleep in your arms when you hold, feed or rock him. He will almost always fall asleep in the stroller, car seat or sling when he gets there. All this is the norm for a little man. At this point, nothing wrong can be done for future sleep habits.

Why doesn't the baby sleep during the day?

If you don’t know why your baby doesn’t sleep well during the day, then first check to see if the following factors are affecting him:

  • Hunger. Newborns usually fall asleep easily after eating. Make sure your baby is fed before rocking him to sleep.
  • Dirty diaper. With rare exceptions, children find it difficult to sleep in a wet or dirty diaper. If your baby is like the majority, he will cry before bed to let you know he needs to change his diaper.
  • Extraneous sounds. In the first weeks of life, an infant is not susceptible to loud sounds, and they practically do not bother him. But even such a baby can be disturbed by sharp knocks, rumbles, noise and loud music.
  • Air temperature. If your newborn baby is capricious day and night and hardly sleeps, then the reason may be that the air temperature in the room does not meet the standards. The optimal temperature is around 20˚C. The choice of home clothing is also important - you shouldn’t wrap it up too much, but you shouldn’t leave it undressed either. You can determine whether your baby is cold or hot by his behavior. If the baby sneezes and actively moves his arms and legs, then most likely he is cold. Pink cheeks, on the contrary, indicate that the room is too hot.
  • Bright light. If a child does not sleep all day, but quickly falls asleep at night, perhaps the reason is daylight, it irritates and prevents him from falling into deep sleep.
  • Uncomfortable clothing or bed. Tight underwear, tight elastic bands, rough seams and synthetic fabrics can also cause discomfort.
  • Stomach ache. Such a common problem as intestinal colic always entails difficulties when putting the baby to bed. You can understand that the baby is not sleeping for this very reason if he kicks his legs and his stomach is hard and tense. Your baby will feel better if you massage his tummy or put him in a warm diaper. Suitable nutrition and medications intended for newborns will help to completely cope with colic and other digestive problems. Before using them, it is better to consult your pediatrician.
  • Emotional overload. With an abundance of impressions and a lot of activity, it may be difficult for the baby to calm down and fall asleep. This is explained by the imperfection of the newborn’s nervous system. Or maybe he’s just too busy learning new things and doesn’t want to go to bed right now. If this is an isolated case, then you can give in to the inquisitive child.

All these reasons are also relevant when it comes to newborns’ night sleep.
