How to put a child to sleep in 5 minutes: quickly and without tears (Komarovsky’s advice)

Among the problems that arise for young mothers with a baby, the little man’s daytime rest is often mentioned. Many parents cannot put their child to sleep during the day. The problem is that it is impossible to influence infants with persuasion, and older babies cannot be forced to fall asleep, even if the baby is lying in the crib. Sometimes the process of putting her to sleep takes longer than rest, a huge amount of the mother’s nerves are spent, the baby cries, but does not sleep. Most inexperienced mothers identify three main problems: difficulty falling asleep, reluctance to go to bed, and the baby’s refusal to sleep.

Swimming for a sound sleep

Water procedures play an important role in child hygiene. Bathing allows you to develop it, strengthens muscles, and helps relieve fatigue. Until the umbilical wound heals, you should use a separate bath for bathing to minimize the risk of infection. Then it is better to use a common large bathroom so that the baby can swim, move his arms and legs, and splash.

Bathing acts as a useful physical activity and brings joy to the baby. Positive emotions and relaxation after physical activity contribute to good sleep. To care for the skin, decoctions of various medicinal herbs are added to the water, after checking in advance for an allergic reaction in the baby.

The suitable temperature is warm, 36°. Hot water has an irritating effect on the baby's nervous system and causes the opposite effect to the desired one. It is recommended to carry out water procedures shortly before bedtime; most babies fall asleep almost immediately.

How to put your child to sleep if he is overexcited

  • Dim the lights and turn on white noise to distract from extraneous sounds.
  • Skip bathing as your child is already overtired. Wash it and start styling.
  • Do everything without fuss and excitement, otherwise your tension will be transferred to the baby and he will not relax.
  • Take a break if your baby won't fall asleep. The main thing is not to turn on the light. Leave the dim nightlight, take it in your arms and walk around the room, sing a lullaby.
  • If your baby usually falls asleep on his own, if he over-walks, he will need more time to calm down and fall asleep. You can help him - one-time help will not ruin the skill of self-sleep.

Adjust the lighting

Light and darkness are responsible for the functioning of the body's circadian rhythms. Darkness promotes the production of the hormone melatonin, which is responsible for sleep and falling asleep. Light is an irritant and causes the child not to sleep

Therefore, it is important to darken the nursery for all sleep, including rest during the day.

  • When your baby is awake, open the curtains and go for a walk outside.
  • Before going to bed, turn off overhead lights and electronic devices in advance.
  • If your child wakes up at night, do not turn on the light or take him into another room. The light will be a signal for him to awaken.

It is best if it is a separate crib in the parents' room. If your baby refuses to sleep in the crib, check whether you are making one of the following mistakes:

  • Do you use it only during rest or also when your child is awake for games?
  • Is it just sleeping or is there other entertainment in the bedroom?
  • Does your baby fall asleep on your chest or in your arms and only then do you move him to his crib?

For infants, use a side cot. For older children, a regular crib with sides is suitable. Do not forget about the safety rules: there should be no pillows, blankets, soft bumpers or toys in the bed.

If the baby falls asleep on the breast, move the feeding first to the middle and then to the beginning of the ritual. Or feed in the light. Every time your baby closes his eyes and falls asleep, remove the breast. This will let him know that feeding and sleeping are not connected. The same applies to rocking, carrying, and pacifiers. Let them be part of the bedtime process, but not the way to fall asleep.

Introduce a bedtime ritual. It will relax the baby even more and set him up for rest. The main thing is to repeat the entire sequence of actions every day. For example, bathing and washing, massage, changing into pajamas, a fairy tale, a lullaby, feeding, turning on white noise and a farewell phrase.

Place the baby in the crib after the ritual and feeding, sleepy, but not completely asleep. This is the only way he will learn to fall asleep on his own.

Teach the skill of falling asleep independently if the child is older than 4 months.

By this age, the baby is ready to sleep for longer periods of time, his nervous system is maturing, and his sleep patterns are becoming like those of an adult.

If you decide to train SZ on your own without a consultant for up to 6 months, use slow methods. After 6 months you can train using slow and fast methods. Remember that there are only 4 methods of falling asleep on your own, which are tested and approved by pediatricians: the exclusion method, constant distance, intervals and hug-and-put.

Duration of normal rest

Establishing a daily routine from birth is an important task. Not only the child, but the whole family will have a rest.

How much should an infant sleep in the first month? A newborn baby sleeps about 17-18 hours a day. Children at this age never sleep more than 3-4 hours - neither day nor night.

Close observation of your baby will help you establish a rest routine. What matters is how long he stays awake. The waking time is no more than 2 hours. If you don't keep track of time and put your child to bed later, he will become overtired. Signs of drowsiness include yawning and touching your face. At this time, you need to put the baby in the crib. You can sing a lullaby, or just talk quietly, monotonously. Such attentiveness will help teach the baby to sleep in its place.

During the daytime, you need to communicate with the newborn more often and carry him in your arms. If a child wakes up at night, you should not play with him or talk for a long time. No need to turn on the light. These actions will help establish a routine, and it will be easy to teach the child to distinguish between day and night.

How long does a 2-3 month old baby sleep? By 3 months, sleep duration decreases to 15 hours.

The baby sleeps twice a day. Children's daily routine should be supplemented with rituals of waking up and going to bed.

How long should a one year old baby sleep? By the end of the 12th month, your baby should sleep about 12 hours a day. At this time, the transition to one-day sleep occurs.

If you have managed to establish a sleep-wake schedule, the child eats well, walks a lot, but still has difficulty falling asleep and sleeps little (less than 40 minutes), you should consult a doctor for advice.

Features of sleep during the day at 6 months

Not having a strict routine means you don't have to try to get your baby to sleep down to the minute every day, but having a rough routine is also important. This applies not only to going to bed in the evening, but also to sleeping during the day. During the day, a six-month-old baby should be asked to sleep 3 times, with each sleep lasting from 1 to 2.5 hours.

Not only sleep at night should take place in a calm environment. Sleeping during the day also means ensuring an acceptable noise level - do not turn on the TV or music too loudly. The quality of sleep depends on this, since the baby can rest well in the presence of silence.

If your baby doesn’t sleep well at night, falls asleep late, or is difficult to put to sleep, you should pay attention to the total number of hours of sleep per day. Based on this, the duration of his sleep during the day should be normalized.

The most important thing is not to allow him to sleep during the day in the evening, and the afternoon nap should be no more than 1.5-2 hours. Due to prolonged wakefulness during the day, evening bedtime will go much faster.

If your baby is sleeping soundly and you need to interrupt his sleep, for example, to visit the clinic, you should do it correctly. Sleep during the day, as well as at night, consists of several phases lasting about an hour and a half. If you wake up the baby in the middle of any of the sleep phases, the child’s well-being will not be the best, so during the day it is necessary to interrupt sleep after one and a half to three hours.

Taking a closer look at the baby, you can see in what phase his sleep takes place. If the baby sleeps with a relaxed facial expression, slow pulse and even breathing, then we can judge that he is in deep sleep. At the moment, it is better to hold off on waking up. Shallow sleep is accompanied by movement; the child sleeps by changing position and making sounds. It is then that you can wake up the child.

If during the day the baby wakes up in a capricious mood and cries, it is recommended to put him back to sleep. The fact is that a well-slept and rested baby will be in a good mood. He may wake up from sudden and sharp sounds or by turning around incorrectly. If your baby is tearful after sleep, there is no need to rush to get the baby out of the crib to wake up and play; you can change his diaper and try to put him to bed again.

How long should a child sleep during the day?

The question of the number of hours of children's sleep during the day, of course, depends on the age of your child. Below is a table with approximate sleep norms for different ages. In addition, the child’s health status must be taken into account individually. If your baby is feeling slightly unwell, it is quite possible that he will sleep longer than usual or, on the contrary, refuse to sleep. In this case, you should still try to adhere to the required number of hours of sleep per day.

Table with sleep norms

General rules

Evgeny Komarovsky, who devoted most of his life to children's health issues, identifies ten rules for normal and healthy children's sleep. If you adhere to them, then putting your child to sleep will be easy and simple, regardless of whether it is an infant or a child at a more conscious age.

Be clear about your priorities. Starting from the first day of the baby's presence in the house, you need to set priorities. The main thing should be sleep. Moreover, parents must set priorities; the baby cannot and should not dictate their terms to them. In other words, it is not the family that should adapt to the baby’s daily routine, but the baby – to the routine adopted in the family

This is important so that mom, dad and other family members can get enough sleep. Without this, parents and children will feel exhausted, tired, and incapacitated.

Set your own mode

You shouldn’t be guided by the routine of your neighbor’s baby, or by what they write in smart books on caring for babies. Your own routine may be different, and that's okay. If the work schedule of the household is such that it is customary for the family to get up late and go to bed late too, then the child needs to follow it. You just need to set a common bedtime for everyone. It is better not to change the selected time later.

The child should have his own place to rest. Sleeping in different places every time is not the best solution for organizing a child’s sleep. From the very beginning, you need to give the baby his place. There are three options: a crib in the room where mom and dad sleep, a crib in a separate room, or sleeping together in the same bed with parents.

  • Have a good and fulfilling day. Children sleep better if they walk and play with them during the day, who get enough sunlight and fresh air, and who play outdoor games. If your child has trouble sleeping, you can try increasing the time of walking and increasing physical activity. But before going to bed, it is better to protect the child from excessive vivid emotions and experiences a couple of hours before bedtime - overstimulation of the nervous system does not contribute to falling asleep quickly and sound sleep.
  • Microclimate, recreation conditions. Evgeny Komarovsky urges not to underestimate the importance of the microclimate in the room where the child sleeps. Good sleep is promoted by clean, sufficiently humidified, moderately cool air. The doctor recommends maintaining a temperature in the sleeping room from 18 to 20 degrees Celsius and even slightly lower (up to 16 degrees) with air humidity at 50-70%.
  • Bathing is not only a hygienic necessity, but also a means of improving sleep. Evgeniy Komarovsky recommends taking advantage of the beneficial effects of water on the child’s body. He considers evening bathing in a large bathtub filled with cool rather than hot water to be the most optimal. During such a water procedure, the child will get tired, and after a hearty dinner he will definitely fall asleep quickly and soundly.

The right bed

The child should have a comfortable bed, a moderately firm mattress, natural bed linen that is pleasant to the touch, and a child under two years old should not sleep on a pillow, its absence is important for the normal formation of the spine. It is important to wash children’s underwear and pajamas in which the child sleeps. Only hypoallergenic laundry detergents created specifically for the care of children's clothes.

Particular attention to the quality of diapers! Komarovsky believes that a high-quality diaper is useful for both parents and the baby and certainly promotes sound sleep

A good quality disposable diaper that fits securely on the bottom and is highly absorbent will help ensure a normal night's sleep, as the baby will not feel discomfort due to dampness and irritation on the skin.

Follow the regime!

To make it easier to put your child to sleep during the day, you should not allow him to sleep late. Another rule is to put your child to bed at the same time. The right routine will help you create a clear daily routine that your child will soon get used to. The best way to help you with this is the kindergarten schedule. The child should wake up no later than 8 am. Breakfast at 9, lunch at 12-13 o'clock. After lunch, sleep, followed by afternoon tea at 16.00, then a walk, dinner. Children who go to kindergarten usually do not suffer from this problem, because they have a clearly defined routine. If you are just getting ready to go to the garden, accustom your baby to a similar routine in advance - it will be very useful.

how to hold a newborn baby correctly

Several techniques for laying down and sleeping

When mom and dad chronically do not get enough sleep, all known ways to calm the baby are used. Despite modern techniques, well-known old ones, such as rocking and singing lullabies, still help parents cope with difficult situations.

1. Rocking, accompanied by a soft song or calm music, is very effective. At the same time, you can hold the child in your arms - clinging to the warm mother’s breast, he feels protected and quickly calms down, and monotonous singing contributes to this

True, after this, the sleeping baby will have to be very carefully put into bed. You can rock your baby to sleep in a crib, but to do this, be sure to gently stroke and hug him with your hand. Some mothers give him a favorite soft toy, a soft rolled up towel, or their still warm underwear

This way the baby will feel the warmth and smell of the mother. If the mother’s vocal skills don’t work out, then you can read fairy tales to the child at night or tell a story about what new and interesting things happened during the day. This should be done quietly, periodically repeating that the parents are nearby and the baby will soon fall asleep. This is a kind of suggestion, which, however, has a calming effect on the child’s psyche, relaxes the baby and prepares him for sleep.

Bedtime rituals, although incomprehensible to children at first, have amazing positive effects. And over time, they begin to understand the obvious meaning of what is happening and quickly fall asleep.

If, day after day, half an hour before bedtime, the child sees and feels the same actions, he will soon get used to it - he will associate pleasant words, sounds, and strokes with the moment of falling asleep.

And yet he is a morning person!

If your child is an incorrigible morning person, do not rush to give up.

Tip one:

allow yourself to sleep with your child, including during the day. Adjust your schedule to suit your child's routine.

Tip two:

Teach your baby to be quiet after waking up without disturbing his parents.

  1. Leave a bottle of tea and cookies next to the crib. Put down your favorite book. For little ones, you can use bright toys by hanging them between the bars of the crib on the sides, front and back. Attention, toys must be safe!
  2. A “Sunday chest” - a box with toys that he can play with only on weekends - will help keep an older child occupied. These should be toys that can keep a child occupied for a long time: construction sets with figures, zoo farms, cars or a children's table service.
  3. Remind your child that his beloved bear and baby elephant need his help in the morning: they must do exercises, wash themselves with pretend water, brush their teeth and, of course, eat some imaginary pumpkin, a couple of tons of eggplants and other food that is healthy for bears and elephants. And it’s better to wake up mom after their breakfast.
  4. Teach your baby to turn on the tape recorder so he can listen to his favorite fairy tale.
  5. Allow your child to come into your bedroom when he wakes up. Arrange a special secret place for him where he can sit or lie down: set up a children's tent, cover the table with a blanket (it will be a cave), put a mattress or sleeping bag there. In general, arrange a nest so that the baby can sit comfortably in it without crawling into the parent’s bed and without disturbing your sleep.
  6. Get up in the morning in turns: on Saturday - mom, and on Sunday - dad.

Recommendations for parents

Sleep is important for a child's development. It helps to gain strength for proper physical and mental development.

To prevent the installation process from being long and tedious, you need to follow proven techniques.

How to put your baby to sleep without crying:

Feeding.

Hunger causes anxiety, which makes the baby wake up. Therefore, we make sure to feed the child before bedtime.

Ritual.

Every day, before laying down, you must perform the same actions in a certain sequence.

The ritual will relax you and set you up for sleep. There must be several actions; one will not be enough. You need to start them 15–20 minutes before bedtime.

Important! It is recommended to include activities that calm the baby. They are different for everyone, so you need to watch the child’s reaction. Quiet activities

Quiet activities.

Exercises, noisy and active games are not suitable for evening time. They can overstimulate and interfere with the mood for a night's rest. This will disrupt your normal bedtime routine.

The right clothes.

The baby should be dressed according to the temperature in the room. He shouldn't be hot or cold.

Temperature and humidity.

In the nursery, special air conditions must be observed. Comfortable temperature is 18–20 degrees, and humidity is 50–70%. Read more in the article Temperature in the room for a newborn>>>

Fresh air.

It is important to ventilate the room before going to bed. Fresh and cool air promotes sound sleep not only for children, but also for their parents. Flexible mode

Flexible mode.

Feeding and rest during the day have a big impact on nighttime sleep. The time of morning awakening, feeding and daytime naps help set the biological clock. A properly constructed routine will ensure that the child is ready to fall asleep at the right time.

When creating a daily routine, you need to focus on the baby's behavior. The regime must be flexible. Therefore, if your baby wants to eat or sleep earlier than usual, you should not wait until the allotted time.

As you can see, there are many reasons that prevent you from falling asleep easily and quickly.

Features of organizing daytime sleep

In order for a child to fall asleep during the day without resistance, you need to help him tune in to this both physiologically and psychologically.

To do this correctly, you should know some simple rules.

Compliance with the daily routine is one of the fundamental conditions. Having gotten used to falling asleep at the same time, the child himself will want to sleep at the appointed time.

You should not shift this time without objective reasons, otherwise there is a risk of shifting the entire habitual rhythm set by the regime.

It is important to stop overly active activities shortly before bed. The opinion that if a child runs around and makes noise before bed, he will get tired and fall asleep faster is wrong. Babies are not able to calm down on command; if they are overexcited, they simply will not be able to fall asleep peacefully, or their sleep will be short in duration and will not provide the necessary rest. About an hour before bedtime, noisy, active games should be stopped.

It is better to find a quiet activity for your child:

  • drawing;
  • modeling;
  • game of constructor, etc.

Drawing is a good activity before bed

Loud, sharp sounds are irritating to the baby and will interfere with sleep. It is not necessary to create silence, but the noises should be monotonous and even. You should also close the curtains from the bright sun, although darkness is also not necessary. Calm daylight and light background noise will help your child fall asleep faster.

A special ritual before bedtime will help your child get into the right mood. This could be a fairy tale read or told, a glass of warm milk, favorite pajamas, a song sung or something else, the main thing is that it has a calming effect on the baby. The ritual should be repeated and observed every day. The child will wait for it with pleasure and fall asleep afterwards without protest.

It is also important that the room is not stuffy or cold. Before going to bed, you can ventilate the room; the temperature should be about 20 degrees. The child should not be overly wrapped; blankets and clothes should not hinder movement. Comfort during sleep helps the child to have a good rest.

The child must sleep in his own crib

You should not teach your baby to sleep in the car or fall asleep in a stroller while walking. If you replace this with daytime sleep in a crib, he will quickly get used to motion sickness and subsequently it will be difficult to fall asleep on his own.

Don't forget about such an important point as tactile contact. If you hold your child's hand or stroke his back, the gentle touch will have a calming effect, he will fall asleep calmer and faster. You can talk to him in a quiet voice or talk about something monotonously.

It is necessary to teach the child to go to bed voluntarily; there is no need to resort to threats. By promising to leave him without his favorite cartoons, if he does not go to bed, you can achieve the opposite effect: the baby will be upset and will not sleep at all.

It is very important to remember that the time it takes for a child to fall asleep may vary. Some children will spend 15 minutes on this, others – forty. It is necessary to patiently give him the opportunity to sleep peacefully, without demanding that he do it immediately.

The most important thing in organizing daytime sleep for children is the calmness and goodwill of the parents.

It is impossible to explain to a child by shouting, threatening punishment, or irritability that it is now time for him to sleep; this will most likely cause protest or tears.

A patient, calm, friendly tone and gentle treatment will help you get ready for sleep and calm the baby.

It is important for parents to understand that their daily rhythm should not contradict the child’s routine. If it's time for a nap, don't talk loudly, play music, or have guests. This may prevent your child from getting a good night's sleep.

Stress in young mothers is a common occurrence. After all, the mother has to deal only with the baby all day long. How not to go crazy while on maternity leave and what to do with yourself? Read useful tips.

What to do if your child has a three-year-old crisis? What it is expressed in and how parents should behave, you will learn from this material.

Teaching your child to have a quiet nap during the day is not at all difficult. If you follow a constant daily routine, in a comfortable, familiar environment, the child will quickly learn to fall asleep during the day on his own, without persuasion, motion sickness and scandals. It is necessary to show consistency and patience, to create a pleasant atmosphere so that the baby loves the process of putting him to bed and happily agrees to sleep during the day.

Daytime sleep will help him grow and develop harmoniously, maintaining health, including psychological health.

Why wake up?

Parents try not to disturb the sleeping child. Long daytime sleep leads to active wakefulness and difficulty falling asleep in the evening. As a child ages, he sleeps less during the day. The needs of different children are individual. There are averages for the required amount of sleep:

  1. Children under 3 months require 15-20 hours per day;
  2. A six-month-old baby sleeps 15 hours;
  3. A one-year-old child needs 14 hours.

If a 6-month-old baby sleeps more than eight hours during the day, he will not fall asleep for a long time in the evening, and his night's rest will be significantly reduced. It is better to limit daytime sleep. In the first month, a newborn needs much more time to recuperate; it is worth waking him up for feeding, bathing, and necessary procedures.

As many children age, their need for daytime sleep sharply decreases; this is due to individual characteristics. If the child is unwell and sleeps little, you should not force him. Sufficient activity, good health during the day and falling asleep quickly in the evening indicate that he can easily do without daytime sleep.

What are the benefits of sleeping during the day?

A child needs sleep during daylight hours.

The nervous system in children is often emotionally overloaded due to a large number of different impressions.

Rest during the day serves as a preventive measure against various neurological problems, has a calming effect, and reduces the risk of behavioral disorders.

If the baby sleeps regularly during the day, he has a higher concentration of attention, he behaves calmer, is able to independently study without the participation of adults, and is less susceptible to sudden mood changes. The child learns new skills more easily, masters knowledge, and masters information better.

During sleep, growth hormone is produced, which is of great importance for physical harmonious development.

In addition, there is a general strengthening of the body due to increased immunity.

A child's lack of daytime sleep can have consequences that parents need to be aware of:

  • delayed intellectual, mental and physical development;
  • excess weight - the missing energy is often compensated for by a large number of calories;
  • irritability, lack of concentration;
  • moodiness, tearfulness, etc.

You cannot compensate for the lack of daytime rest with night rest. If a child does not sleep during the day, due to overwork of nerve cells, he becomes restless; overexcitation does not allow him to fall asleep soundly in the evening, making sleep restless and intermittent.

Rules for healthy sleep from Dr. Komarovsky

Famous pediatrician E.O. Komarovsky notes that healthy sleep can be called such rest when both children and parents feel comfortable.

Recommendations on how to put a child to sleep according to E. Komarovsky:

  1. Decide on your priorities. The baby needs well-rested parents who don’t fight over trifles, don’t get nervous, but love each other.
  2. Establish a sleep routine. Choose a time that is convenient for your family and stick to it. Prepare your child for bed in advance.
  3. Decide on a place for your children's holiday. A son or daughter can sleep in a crib located in the parents' bedroom or children's room, or in the same bed with their parents.
  4. Don't let your baby sleep too long during the day. Consider your child's sleep schedule. A one-year-old son should rest for about 13.5 hours. If parents want, they set aside 11 hours at night for this; daytime sleep should not be more than 2.5 hours. If necessary, you should wake up the baby during the day.
  5. Optimize night feedings. A six-month-old child no longer physiologically needs food at night. When your baby cries, do not immediately distract him with a bottle of formula while bottle-feeding. There is no need to use mom to satisfy the sucking reflex. There are many reasons for a child's crying other than hunger.
  6. Make the most of your day. Walking in the fresh air and physical activity without fanaticism are useful for healthy sleep. Emotional overload is undesirable before bedtime. It is preferable to read good fairy tales, mother's lullaby or watch your favorite cartoon together.
  7. Maintain the air temperature in the children's room from 18 to 20 ° C with a humidity of 50-70%.
  8. Enjoy the pleasures of swimming. Before water procedures, gymnastic exercises or massage are useful. Swimming in cool water in the evenings increases the baby's appetite and makes him feel tired. Having put on warm clothes after bathing, he will eat with pleasure and fall asleep soundly.
  9. Make sure your bed is comfortable. Until the age of two, a baby does not need a pillow. The mattress should not sag under the weight of the child. Natural fabrics - cotton, linen - are suitable for children's bedding. Synthetics are not welcome. Keep your bedding clean.
  10. Use quality diapers. The baby's bottom should not suffer at night from excess moisture. A child in a comfortable, reliable diaper sleeps peacefully all night without disturbing his family.

How to teach your baby to sleep through the night

And if your child can already fall asleep on his own, but often wakes up at night, then it’s time to teach him to sleep through the night. Just imagine, the child sleeps all night, does not cry, he is calm, you are calm, everyone in the house is happy.

How to teach a baby to sleep through the night?

Follow these guidelines:

  1. Firstly, he needs to be able to distinguish day from night. Teaching him to do this is quite simple. If during the day it is bright, cheerful and noisy, then in the evening you need to dim the lights in the house so that a quiet and calm atmosphere reigns.
  2. Secondly, at first it is better to sleep in the same room with the child, but not in the same bed. Make sure your baby's crib and your bed are close to each other. It is desirable that the mattresses are at the same level. Since you will still wake up sometimes at night to make sure everything is okay with your baby. And in such conditions it will be much easier to do this.
  3. Thirdly, the baby needs to be swaddled at night - so the likelihood that he will wake up fewer times at night will be higher, since his arms are tightly pressed to his body and he will not involuntarily wake himself up. In addition, swaddling at night is useful because the baby will most likely sleep on his back all night, which is very beneficial for the health of babies.

Advice: If the child still wakes up at night, under no circumstances should you play outdoor games with him. It’s better to hold her in your arms for a while, then put her in her crib and read fairy tales in a quiet, calm voice, without turning on the bright lights.

How to lay the “slider”?

With babies older than 6 months it can be a little more difficult. As I already said, they begin to actively develop and learn about everything around them. Nobody wants to sleep.

But we are adults, experienced and wise people who should be able to choose the right key to our child’s nervous system at any age. Let's learn this wisdom. How to quickly put a baby to sleep at 6 months and older?

What will help you? Here are a few simple rules that may seem like truisms to some (experienced parents or doctors). But you’re not one of them, since getting your child to sleep is still a problem for you.

  1. Staying awake is serious;

To lay down the "slider", the first thing you must control is the wakefulness mode.

For a child at this age, physical and emotional activity is important for full development

If there are few of them, your baby simply will not get tired; However, it is important for him not to “overact”, otherwise overexcitation will inhibit falling asleep; Therefore, activity is required, but 30 minutes before putting the fidget to bed, stop loading his psyche with emotions and his body with unnecessary mobility. Let him calm down.

  1. Beacons;

The child always “beacons” to you that it is time for him to sleep. Your task is not to miss these signals.

  • If the child yawns, rubs his eyes, sucks his fist (or anything else), is capricious, hangs on his mother, loses coordination - the time has come;
  • If you miss the moment, instead of the sleep hormone, the body will begin to produce stress hormone. Would you be able to sleep in this state? Why should the baby?
  1. The right attitude;
  • A daily routine will help prepare your child for the fact that he needs to sleep soon. The baby will get used to recognizing the sequence of actions, his body will gradually remember, after which it is time to sleep;
  • Special rituals will help you tune in to sleep. They must be done daily, in the same sequence. This is described in detail in the article Bedtime Rituals>>>;
  • The child will very quickly get used to the action that sleep entails (“farewell” hugs, kisses, massages, putting down a favorite toy or something else);
  • 20 minutes before putting your baby to bed, set him up by dimming the lights and sounds in the room and ventilating the area where he will sleep.
  1. After six months, children often do not attach much importance to food during the day. They already have a lot of interesting things. Therefore, in order to put your baby to bed for the whole night, before going to bed, make sure that the child is not hungry;

By the way! If a child does not eat complementary foods well, start following the scheme proposed in the online course ABC of complementary feeding: safe introduction of complementary foods to your baby>>>

The presence of a mother is no less important for a baby at this age. When you put him to bed, you can do more than just sing him a lullaby or read something to him

It is important to stroke his back or tummy, and hold his hand. Even just placing your hand on his side, you will provide a feeling of calm and security, without which it is impossible to put the child to bed

How to put a baby to bed before 3 years of age

One and a half year old children understand many words of adults. Going to rest during the day becomes a mandatory daily ritual:

  1. For an hour and a half before going to bed, the baby is occupied with quiet games, reading fairy tales, looking at pictures, and drawing.
  2. Immediately before bedtime, the child is washed, changed into pajamas, placed on the potty, and put on a diaper.
  3. A ritual of saying goodbye to the sun and closing the curtains is desirable.
  4. The child lies down in the crib and takes his favorite toy.
  5. Mom tells a story, sings a lullaby, turns on white noise.
  6. At the age of 2, the main thing is to intrigue the child. Offer to put a book under the pillow so that you can dream about a fairy tale.

As the child ages, it is useful to tell him what he will do after rest, to tell him a secret: time will come faster if he falls asleep. Performing this ritual is not recommended for all children; easily excitable children, when fantasizing, get excited - the process of falling asleep slows down. For the same reason, the child is not promised a cartoon or candy after sleep.

Starting from the age of one and a half years, children are taught to fall asleep in the room on their own. Mom says she will go out for a minute, goes out, closes the door, and returns only after 60 seconds (even if the baby is crying). The crying baby is calmed down, rocked to sleep and left again.

Gradually, the child gets used to the mother’s new behavior, and the periods of independent stay in the room become longer, the child gets used to falling asleep on his own. The technique was described by the Spanish pediatrician Estiville; he recommended throughout the day to remind the baby that he needs to sleep soon, and then act according to the described scenario.

If a 3-year-old child sleeps poorly during the day, he does not have a routine, the time of falling asleep is not fixed, there is no algorithm for falling asleep, then it will not be possible to quickly put such a child to sleep at one time. Having applied the described tips, the mother will have to be patient and develop the necessary habits in her child. The reward for boundless patience will be the good health of the little man, the child’s calm behavior, and the ability to plan his own time.

3How to put a child to sleep in 5 minutes using the method of pediatrician Harvey Karp?

  1. Motion sickness. Measured movements will remind the baby of the sensations experienced in the womb. He calms down and falls asleep. Motion sickness helps the development of the vestibular system, according to the pediatrician. When the baby falls asleep, transfer it to the crib.
  2. Swaddling. Wrap a baby up to 3-4 months old in a swaddle or blanket. Focus on the temperature in the room. Small children are prevented from falling asleep by moving their hands. Swaddling will reduce motor activity and after 5 minutes the baby will fall asleep. Don't forget a fresh diaper.
  3. Dummy. The baby is not distracted by external stimuli with the pacifier, calms down and quickly falls asleep. Remove the pacifier from the baby's mouth during deep sleep.
  4. Laying on your side. According to the pediatrician, sleeping on your back is a dangerous position. The child is afraid of this. Swaddle your baby tightly and turn him on his side. Excess gases will go away, and the baby will fall asleep in 5 minutes.
  5. Organizing “white noise” in the room. In his mother’s belly, the baby heard the beating of her heart and the blood running through the vessels. He is used to noise, and after birth he feels uncomfortable in silence. Turn on a radio with soothing music, a hair dryer or other household appliance. The music can be a natural theme - birdsong, the sound of rain.

How to put a baby to sleep during the day

Before putting a month-old baby to bed during the daytime, the baby must be attached to the breast and bottle-fed. Babies go to sleep only when they are completely full.

Some babies walk for a bit after feeding and then fall asleep. Simple observation of the baby will help to establish the sequence of behavior.

If your baby doesn’t sleep well during the day, constantly wakes up, or is capricious, in order to put your baby to sleep, use the Harvey Karp method. The American pediatrician divides falling asleep into 5 stages:

  1. Loose swaddling of the baby. By moving his arms and legs, the newborn wakes himself up and therefore does not get enough sleep. The doctor calls the feeling of the mother's womb as an argument for swaddling; in swaddling, the baby returns to its usual state of low mobility and calms down.
  2. Motion sickness. It should be slow, reminiscent of the rhythm of a heartbeat. The baby calms down, feeling the usual rhythm and warmth. A six-month-old baby is held in the arms until half asleep, and then placed in a crib. Gradually he will wean himself off the rocking method and get used to falling asleep in his crib.
  3. Using a pacifier. In the first months of life, infants have a strongly developed sucking reflex; a pacifier will help calm them down. Immediately after falling asleep, it is taken out. After 6 months, the child is weaned off the pacifier, replacing it with a soft toy and other attributes.
  4. Laying on the side. Babies sleep well on their sides.
  5. Using "white noise". Monotonous sounds: the murmuring of a brook, the sound of the surf, the singing of birds, very quiet, barely audible, contribute to the baby’s rest. After the child falls asleep, the sounds are removed.

Using the technique, the mother will not be able to apply all five stages of motion sickness at the same time, only some that are convenient in a particular case. H. Karp allowed this option for placing a baby.

Many pediatricians, including Dr. Komarovsky, recommend co-sleeping with your baby. The mother puts the baby under the side to sleep and rests nearby. For a newborn, being near his mother and hearing the sound of her heartbeat is a great way to calm down and fall asleep.

When the child reaches six months, a crib is used for daytime rest.

Children of the first year of life tie their place of stay to the action. The baby should not play in the crib, then the baby will learn that they sleep here, and the bedtime will end with a quick fall asleep.

Infants in the first months of life are often tormented by colic; when putting the baby to bed, they massage the abdomen. Circular movements are carried out over the tummy in a clockwise direction. Massage relieves colic and helps to calm down.

To put a newborn baby to bed, some parents use soft touches: stroking the back, arms, nails, legs, ears. The baby gets used to it, identifies certain touches with sleep, and quickly falls asleep.

In the first months of life, the baby's regimen is built around feeding, and by the age of six months other needs appear. After six months, the child is accustomed to the regime, gradually building it.

What to sleep in

The girls rummaged through a bunch of literature. Everyone writes that if the house is 24-25 degrees, it’s already “terrible” heat and the child sleeps in almost nothing but a diaper. Our pajamas are not cotton, but have a thin comb on the inside and socks. (I won’t fall asleep without socks, checked many times). I don’t cover it. I myself sleep with a T-shirt + shorts and under a warm blanket. Those. Essentially, what I am and what he is is the same. He wakes up not wet, his hands are not hot, he is all warm. If you put it in a cotton slip, everything is cool in the morning.

He rocks himself.

For about two weeks now, when Styopa goes to bed, especially during the day, he seems to be singing a lullaby to himself. He lulls himself to sleep with his voice. At the same time, this is such a plaintive voice. I saw this once when I was in the baby’s home. There the kids were rocking themselves to sleep. But everything is clear there: lack of attention, lack of hands. And here until he falls asleep, I’m next to him. Spends a lot of time in his hands.

Hysteria on the plane

We flew with a 2.4 year old child to Turkey. We flew last year, everything was fine. And this one created such a hysteria when boarding the plane that both dad and grandma were ready to get off the plane and stay at home. He screamed long and heart-rendingly. No valerian helped. When landing, everything was the same, but at least we managed to calm down somehow. We don’t want this anymore and we don’t want to get on the child’s nerves either. Question: what can be used to put him to sleep so that he can be brought onto the plane when he is already sleepy and perhaps give a second dose upon boarding.
